my 808 has the Groove Electronics MIDI retrofit, which only has a MIDI IN and a MIDI THRU.
i'm considering getting hold of the Kenton MIDI retrofit kit which has MIDI OUT.
first of all, does anyone know if it's possible to remove the existing Groove Electronics MIDI kit and to replace it with the Kenton one?
secondly, is the velocity sensitivity increased with the Kenton one? The Groove one only has 16 levels of velocity sensitivity, and some sounds are not very responsive - the snare is really shit at responding to MIDI velocity :(

yeah man, i already programmed the beats from Planet Rock into it
sounds fucking sick man..especially when it's sync'd to my 606....pure analog drums! (can't really class the 909 as pure analog, what with the sampled hihats and cymbals)

Ask this question on analogue heaven or vintagesynths. Why you would trust an answer here I have no clue.

because this is an electronic music messageboard, and there are quite a lot of electronic musicians on here
myself included
i would trust the views and opinions and guidance given here, because most of the people on here seem to know their shit

Analogue filters on those samples. Analogue enough.
Have you looked into getting any of the old sequential gear? I always hear you talking about roland stuff. Thought about getting yourself a six track, or a prophet 2000, or a pro one? IMO: Sequential > (Moog + Roland + Yamaha)

You know, I wouldn't really risk removing one retrofit and installing another, unless you know they can work together (which could be a possibility, but I don't know I am not a good circuit bender). It occurs to me, that the risk of unsoldering the original retrofit and then soldering a new one, you could risk frying the board or killing the circuits they would be soldered to. If you have it done, make sure its in the hands of someone you really trust. I wouldn't risk it just for the midi out. There are plenty of other sources for that kind of sequencing that would have midi out. Unless you are just looking to use it as a master clock, which I don't necessarily see the benefit of when you can just slave it to something less archaic in your studio.

yes im desperate for a Pro One! as soon as i can afford it i think it will be my next gear purchase!
and yeah i know about the analog filters on the 909, but i was being a complete purist! lol. to be honest i think the 606 and 808 go better together than the 909 and 808...dunno why
ahh see i thought that would be a problem with the soldering and stuff...oh well, at least i have some MIDI on it
thanks for your help man :D

Maybe cause the 606 and 808 sound wet. Send you machine to a tech. They could probably remove the retrofit for little money.

(hypnotic)You need a 12 bit sampler/synth with analogue filters. You want a prophet 2000. You want a prophet 2000.(/hypnotic)
Have you thought of going non vintage and getting an evolver desktop for 650us? Or even the monophonic keyboard :) :)You can get the same sound out of an evolver, plus it gives you so much more.

well i really still want a Pro One, but an Evolver Keyboard would be something to look into...
i am trying to go for actual keyboard synths rather than just modules as my main focus will be the ability to have things going live, and i prefer to have built-in keyboards with stuff... i know that in the end things will cost more, but i believe that the ability to just hit the keys at the synth and get the sound is more important.
i'll definitely look into an Evolover though....i'll have to see if i can find a place in Birmingham that has them on show so i can have a listen to one.
i only have 2 digital pieces in my kit, and to be honest i'd prefer to keep it that way...if i want more than just my Nord and Machinedrum for digital sounds, i can fire up Reason on someone's PC :)

Yeah, but you can choose not to use the digital sections in the evolver. Pure analogue goodness. :)
Take my word for it. Nothing touches the evolver.

Can you get the Fenix Funk 808 patterns on your 808? Or do you think they were a mixture of sample loops and single hits?

how about getting yourself decent gear to record all that analogue stuff? I heard your jams and they sound like shit (quality wise).
get a mixer, soundcard, etc etc....

how about you give me some money to buy said decent recording gear?
:p
i'm jobless, i'm paying £75 a week rent on a room in a shared flat in Burton-upon-Trent right now, and i have less than £700 to live on and pay my loan repayments off for this month. after that i'm in shit street without a noseplug.
i know i need decent recording equipment, yes the output of late does sound shit. but i have told people that it sounds like shit - it's not like i'm passing it off as the next analord stuff or anything.
if and when i can get a job, and get a decent place to stay, i shall get all my equipment back again from storage (yet again) and buy some recording gear.
for now, i need to worry about whether or not i can afford to live next month
but thanks for listening :)

well since i am in fact The Aphex Twin i am not really at liberty to divulge how i made my track titled Fenix Funk 5, but i can assure you that i used decent quality recording gear.
ah fuck it, i may as well tell you - i programmed my Casio watch to sequence 12 Casio SK-1 samplers, which each had a single hit from the 808
how good am i?

Im thinking ht e 808 in fenix is a midi'ed up one. You could buy a 2 track reel 2 reel for next to nothing. A 15 ips machine would give you a great sound.
