Hi all, and specifically those who reside in Slovenia, more specifically Tolstoyed, but also anyone who knows his or her bit about Slovenia,
I'm going to Slovenia on vacation in two weeks! Yay, but where to go? I'm mainly interested in culture, mountains and also World War I sites.
I'm thinking about hiking in the Alps (maybe climb the Triglav and supposedly becoming a Slovene?), diving in the Adriatic Sea, hiking in the woods, visiting Lake Bled, Ljubljana, Trieste, Venetia, and spending some time in Istria visiting old towns (Piran, Koper) and swimming.
Does the above include any tourist traps? Should I expect these areas to be flooded with tourists? How do I avoid the Italians with their loudness? Do you have any secret hideouts where no tourist has gone before?
Any input is much appreciated!

Ah but Slovenia was never part of Czechoslovakia, though the Czech Republic and Slovakia were.

here's a museum of ww1 in kobarid which is just under the alps..and very close to italian border..it's not too far to venice from there..or trieste.
they apperantly offer tours on terrain as well..so you can see all left overs from ww1.
as far as triest or venice go you will probably find lots of info..whatever you're interested in. trieste and koper are much alike actually except triest is way bigger. but they both have new part of town (the not interesting one) and the old part of town in the centre..you can see both in one day. trieste gets pretty interesting in the evening usually.
here's a link to major istria towns. you might want to check out izola as well.
there's a nautical museum in the centre of piran..the last time i was there it wasn't much but maybe it's improved now..
info
"diving in the Adriatic Sea" if you mean to take a swim you won't be able to find anything decent..and lots of tourists everywhere..but if you go to croatian part of istrai there's lots of quiet beaches there.
if you mean proper diving there's a cool club called norik you can also find in piran. here's their site, but it looks like it's only in slovenian :) piran is small though and you will be able to find it very quickly.
another two cool places if you're into sightseeing are sečovlje and dragonja. you can find more info about both here.
also, you will find the best restaurants in the inner istria.
i can't really think of something in particular to point out, but if you have any questions go ahead :)
next i'll post some links to ljubljana sites.

The Kobarid-museum looks very interesting! The battles that went on in the East are overshadowed by the trench wars in the West, for some reason. The Soca valley battle in particular seems indescribably hideous.
Thanks for the links on the cities: I forgot to mention I am also intrigued by remains of the Roman Empire in the area. I think Aquileia is also nearby?
Is Croatia worth visiting, apart from Istria? I'm not terribly tempted to go there, but Zagreb might be nice?
By the way your country looks and sounds ideal: Alps, sea, islands (ok just 1 island in the middle of a lake), woods, caves, very nice very old cities, half the size of The Netherlands (I think) and only 2 million people!

here's a pretty useful link to site about ljubljana.
i imagine you're into music..there's a festival starting at the end of the month and lasts to the end of august..some really cool artistscoming..caetano veloso will perform on july 14th..
if you would prefer something alternative here's a link to a cool club where a festival begins at the end of july (if you're around for that long). and here's a site from the biggest alernative place in the city..lots of clubs in that area. there aren't many foreign artists performing this time of year, but there's always something going on..djs, rock bands..it's all there.
as for ljubljana sightseeing..the only thing appart from galleries and museums (you will find information about all that on that first link) is the old part of the town..there's quite a bit going on there..mostly in the evening, down by the river ljubljanica. it's a very small city so if there's some decent gig or festival happening at the time you're here, you will either see it or hear it :)

i see..i'll check for roman stuff. there's some ruins to be found in ljubljana, but nothing much im affraid. not sure where aquileia is..doesn't ring a bell.
well, croatia for me is all about the islands..their part of adriatic sea is surely one of the nicest seasides in the world. the thing is they're pretty far from here..you could find interesting stuff in croatian istria, though the real fun starts in dalmatia. if you're interested in roman empire you could find interesting stuff in pula (it's about 150 kms href="http://www.brijuni.hr/en/Home.aspx?PageID=1&gohome=tr from koper though). there's a national park called ue">brijunithere..it used to be a private place for tito but has been opened to public for a long time now..i imagine lots of tourists there though.
appart from dalmatia and istria, croatia is pretty dull. zagreb is nothing but a big city..museums and galleries lots of gigs and stuff but it isn't a nice city.

here's a list of 8 places in ljubljana where you can see some roman remains, though it's really nothing compared to pula for example.

I once did that globe game where you spin the globe and place your finger on it and when it stops that's where you're going to live. I'm going to live in the middle of the pacific ocean, but when I get sick of that, I'm going to live in slovenia

You could visit the town of Fiume (on the Dalmatian coast i think) where a rebel Italian general took over the town. Although this incindence was before WW1 it was one of the major crisis in which the League of Nations succesfully negotiated and diffused a potentially "sticky" situation.

On a side note, does anyone else think the map of Slovenia somewhat resembles a chicken? Its head being the upper right corner? ;)
