My First Tape Loop

Just made my first tape loop from a cassette with the help
of this guide. It's a crap loop in theory and doesn't
work as it should, but that just makes it more interesting
as it triggers sounds randomly. It's great. Hours of fun
with about 15 mins of work involved.

the recording on my hdd for christ sake.

i recorded a drumloop which sounded much like the beat in
parhelic triangle.

thats very kool, sounds kinda like gescom stuff (keynell)
what tape did you use for the process ?

im reading the guide and still a little clustered:
take a tape and remove a section, then reseal the tape and
then reloop the tape in the case ?

You don't need that at all. All my loops I've done without
cement. Ok, they have been a bit shit, but who cares? Adds
to the flavour :D

Recycle, I'll make a little guide tonight when I have more
time.

I really didn't think you'd like the track. IMO the melodies
are shit, but it's not supposed to demo my musical skills.

The drums are made from slices of loops and sometimes whole
loops cut on Ableton Live. The original sound source is
mainly literally banging the tape player to get the tape
unstuck.

more textures + beats, less beats and fake funk please.

that track didn't pass my subjective muster at all... pretty
stale. Sounds like a less virtuosic sega genesis anthem with
bad IDM drums. There actually weren't any discernible loops,
only resequenced sounds of you putting in a cassette?

Nice start to the thread, but the track doesn't really
support it at all.

TAPE LOOPING IS KILLING MUSIC
and it's illegal

I'm going to bring one of those reel-to-reel thingies at my

something fun like this

haha, I'd love to know how that goes. We've got a Fostex at
school and the guy who takes Sound Recording club is gonna
get a spare reel of his friend to do some looping, etc.
Mind, before you do anything with it, see if you can find a
guide on how to attach tape to a reel. It sounds dead
simple, but it's actually very confusing when you do it.
But, if you're just using it for tape loops, you shouldn't
need to do that.

oh, I've played with it many a time, and attaching tapes to
the reels is dead simple.. you take the white part with no
information on it and pull it through a small hole, then
hold on to it while the wheel thingie makes its first two
rounds.

I'm probably going to try working with some other materials,
I don't want to ruin the tapes (classic awesome old blues on
them). I bet paper covered with aluminum foil should get me
some interesting results. if not, I will find something that
does, and if need be I'll turn it into a van der graaf
generator or whateverthefuckitscalled...

I wonder how the distortion sounds on these.. I may have to
overwrite one of the reels with my music just to hear how it
sounds if I use analogue saturation...

you getv a feedback effect! that shit rocks! and then over
load the sound source for some huge NOISE!

I'm probs gonna modify the cheap tape recorder I have so it
has a mic input (instead of a permanent mic attached), an
output, a wipe head switch (recording over shit makes it
really lo-fi) and maybe a battery cut button so I can stop
the recording instantly and then restart it.

Get an endless loop cassette. That'll do the trip. Or go the
frippertronics route w/ two reels. Probably the best way.

Got back into this recently... just made a tape loop using
VHS tape. On one side there's this weird drone thing (video
signals -> audio = weirdness) and on the other there was
nothing so I recorded over it (successfully).

I've tried making tape loops for the reel-to-reel, but the
tape somehow has to be fastened more; the head thing that
reads the tapes put so much pressure on it that they just
slide on the reels... I never found anything called rubber
cement, so I tried different other solutions, but nothing
works... any ideas?
