beat me and crucify me and ban me and what gives, but
"Doubt" was/is something really energetic and nice to
listen, and yes it needs a new thread cause i couldn't find
a thread about them in the search...

...without comparing them to EMF

and i still claim there wouldn't be albums like this without
New Order's "Technique". It really changed things in British
electronic music after 1988. At least that's what i noticed
and read in music magazines as a kid.

Brits who obvoiusly know more about electronic music from
those times, please discuss.

I had "Info Freako" on 12"... I couldn't afford much at the
time so I never bought the album. Indie Dance!

I much preferred Pop Will Eat Itself. Who were a bit more
beery and versatile. But no less reviled by the shit music
press.

I picked up an album at half price books several weeks ago
but I can't remember the name of it, I think it was
Doubt actually.. is that the one with 'Right Here Right Now'
on it? Naturally that was the only song I recognized..

I am a big fan of this type/era of music, although the album
I felt was only so so.. I need to relisten this afternoon
perhaps. I like EMF alot though.

Dan: What Pop Will Eat Itself stuff should I look into?
Several years ago I heard the Fluke remix of one of their
tracks and liked it immensely.. (Fluke was my favorite band
for much of high school)

I think PWEI hit their stride with 1989's "This is the day,
this is the hour, this is this", featuring all your
favourite hit singles such as "Def Con 1", "Wise Up Sucker"
and "Can U Dig it?" with some more introspective album
tracks such as "The Fuses Have Been Lit" and "Wake up, time
to die" which contains a refrain I often ruefully repeat to
myself ("I've felt worse, but I've felt better").

I also like their first album "Box Frenzy" but that's a lot
scrappier (in a nice way). 1990's "Cure for Sanity" is good
too, more dance poppie.

Jesus Jones "doubt" is the kind of "wow yeah, let's party
and forget what music was played" if you treat it that way.
for me it's long-lost memory album which suddenly feels
great to hear again.
that's it.

I relistened to it yesterday, and it was much better than I
remembered. 'International Bright Young Thing!!!'

still looking for PWEI though..

Okay, I think we can all reapraise early nineties indie
dance as long as we steer clear of Carter Unstoppable Sex
Machine.
They were fucking massive, as well. A number one album in
1990, I think.
Why were they so popular, Mr dog_belch? You were "there".
(So was I, but about 8 years old.)

I never liked Carter USM that much, apart from "Sherrif
Fatman", and maybe, oh "After the watershed", which
incidently had a good b-side "The 90s Revival" coming out,
as it did, in.. 1990. But, yeah, no, well, the thing is
people that knew more about music than me really rated them
so I guess on must look past the crappy image and the fat
bloke and dig the music. I don't think it's dated as well
as... other things, but then not everything should be..
timeless. Agitprop really, I guess,... issues. I saw them
play the night of the Poll Tax riots. Them and Birdland.
Whither Birdland, in these revivalist times?

But their music was just terrible. It sounds like the sort
of thing they'd play once on the evening session for a
laugh...
I really don't get how they were so popular, it's baffling.

I remember the poll tax riots, barely. My parents wouldn't
pay it, they didn't protest, though.

Everybody goes on about My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr,
Ride, whoever, all those early nineties indie bands.
But Carter USM are like a dark secret, the mad relative no
one likes to discuss, even though they sold shitloads more
records than far more credible bands...it's odd.

Haha, well it's like the 80s, people go on about "80s music"
but there's always a light and dark underbelly, the untold
history. I guess like any pop decade.

I never liked Carter, probably what puts you off is the same
as what put me off at the time.

My mate at work who's about 35 told me "You know what got
rid of all that crusty, grebo big pants nonsense? Suede.
Don't laugh, after them, studenty type bands had to be
proper, big 60's/70's-style, "important" BANDS again.

Hmmm, I was a big fan of Suede. I wouldn't put them as being
"important", but musically, and, lyrically, well,
songwriterererererly, I would rate them.

I didn't like big pants, never.

I like a few tunes. It's sort of glam with kitchen sink
lyrics. I knew a few girls who liked them, right up to about
'98-'99, even.
But I can see why they were popular, as opposed to a band
like Carter.

Yeah, I really like his "sound", that Ed Buller, he did a
great job on those two albums, and some of the singles /
b-sides as well. Suede's "High Rising" has that great synthy
atmos that he does so well.

That "The Tears" is a bit strange, I can't really say I
enjoy listening to it that much. The music's like Suede II,
but the lyrics are just.. awful, in my opinion, like a Suede
parody. There's one song on it I really like "Autograph",
which is almost rocking Smiths-y sounding. But other than
that... hmm, it's just weird to split up over musical
differences and then get back together ten years later
sounding exactly like you did ten years ago.

Now I remember who I know who liked Suede.
A kid who played guitar and really rated Bernard Butler, and
was made up when he left Suede 'cause he hated Brett
Anderson's voice. And a girl I was trying to poke who really
fancied Brett Anderson and though Suede were really cool and
mysterious. (Just as well I didn't, we were 14!)

there a few good moments on that album and it's good that
they got back together , sure, but still - they would sound
a lot better NOT splitting up those years ago. the first
album shows that buttler/anderson were one of those teams
meant to work together.

a few good moments on the tears album confirm that too.

For the record, I've had somewhat of a change of heart about
Jesus Jones since my last disinterested, blase post in this
thread. Since this topic came up I relistened to my Doubt
tape several times and picked up Liquidizer which is a
little bland but conventional standards but still kills me
(in a good way). I still think EMF may be better when
they're at the top of their game, but EMF is really hit or
miss and agonizingly cliche at times, whereas Jesus Jones
seems very consistent. But here I go, creating false
binaries..

Doubt sounds so good to me after years that i'm afraid to
check the other albums in case they might break the spell or
something.

the strong beat in "who_ where_ why" still sounds
FRESHHH.........and 'Stripped', hahahah = carpet bombing

and EMF....i have only 'unbelievable' and that weak singer's
voice in my mind when i think of them. i can't remember
anything else from 'schubert dip' [?] these days.

Haha, I know that feeling of wanting to keep a band's image
intact.. same goes for seeing pictures of bands you love but
never bothered to look up before. Although I can tell you,
at least in my humble opinion, that Liquidizer is very good.
Then again, I kind of like samey songs..

'Who where why' is indeed good.. and dated but not
hackneyed. I also like "Are you satisfied' and
'International...' a hell of a lot.

As far as EMF goes they're really spotty but when they're
good they're excellent. I just like their attitude too.
From what you said it sounds like you have Schubert Dip..
take a listen to 'Girl of an Age'.. it's one of my favorite
tracks in existence. Ahh!
