[reason] break cutting

ive got a feeling i asked this ages ago but...

a lot of people really like reason for cutting breaks,
personally im a bit thick and for tracks where I am
constantly editting the break I cant get reason to do it
smoothly and I only really get a good result using a wave
editor, which is inconvenient now that ive started using
reason a lot. When using reason it is a bit jumpy because
each hit is triggered according to the grid, unless i go
through one by one moving them slightly to the left or right
of the gridlines, which is stoopid.

listen to this to hear what I mean
listen
first the jerky break from reason then the same break made
in the wave editor

im sure im missing something obvious in how to use the
quantise/user groove function but i cant seem to crack it so
I was hoping an XLTer can help me thru these diffuclt times,
so i can increase my degenerate amen based track production
rate, innit.

if none of this means anything to you hey! id like to know
how you edit your breaks in whatever programs you use!

well if the wav is too long/short for the loop, then the
tempo is obviously mismatched.

I dislike breaks actually, its much easier (for me at least)
to just snip out the sounds i like from a break, and keep it
as a one sample. Then i divide all my samples into
categories, like, snares, kicks, percussion, hihats so on so
on. Then i mix and match, layer sounds and so forth, until i
come up with something i like. I never found cutting breaks
usefull.

well the nn19 just plays the wav as a straight sample but
the rex plays a sequence of sampled hits, so yeah there
should be a fair bit of difference, i don't really follow.

well okay, if i use the dr rex, and do 'send to track', it
arranges the hits so they run smoothly, but in the original
order. if i want to rearrange the hits this doesnt help. or
does it?

uhh rearrange rex loops in the edit window?

but then when you move them they snap back to the grid and
you get the jumpy sound again

i can't hear that file, and i'm not sure what you mean by
snaping back to the grid. i use dr rex a lot though

don't quantize the notes?

or turn snap to grid off?

or change the value of each incrament?

d) dunno W00fter

i cant get yousendit to work so never mind that file...

what i mean is that each of the drum hits in the break isnt
exactly a 16th of a beat, so when you lay them out in the
sequencer as though they are, sometimes a hit seems late or
early because of this. if you do send track from dr rex it
puts them in the sequencer in the exact arrangement they are
in the break, so they dont sound wrong at all. but when you
start rearranging them, you have to use snap to grid because
otherwise you'd be trying to remember the slightly different
lengths of each hit so you could position all the hits
without them sound early/late in relation to the previous
hit

oh honestly i just re-draw them one by one, so that they
fill out the grid evenly, and if there's stutters or audio
gaps i'll usually transpose it down a couple steps
