In the depths of yesteryear I began the pretentious pursuit
of writing a novel. I posted some shitty drafts and I have
been making slow but gradual progress since. In fact I’d
go so far as to say the actual plot is getting kind of
interesting. I’ve started amassing characters here and
there and it’s getting to the point where they need names.
Here’s where the point of this post comes in. I need some
names. Random names but REAL ONES ONLY please. They can be
silly but just make them real not made up like Digby BAGFART
or something. I only have two names as of the moment. The
first is the main character who is called Francis Cole and
the second is the protagonist called Jonas Scurlage so you
know the ball park to aim for. Also any info or interesting
facts about Monarch butterflies would be nice as there are
swarms of them in the book and they are kind of important
(due to an old Mexican myth that suggested they carried the
souls of the dead to their resting places blah blah blah).
Also place names would be cool, I need a name for a circus
and one for a pachinko parlour. If anyone wishes to help
I’d be very grateful.

isn't there a Scandinavian myth saying about the same things
but moths instead of butterflies?

the souls of the dead turn into moths, etc.

Geoff Tindell
Marcus Hodder

i had to read a paper on monarch butterflies last year, i
just looked it up apparently someone called Lincoln Pierson
Brower is the big name in research on them so that could be
a clever likkle reference maybe

when I need full names for characters I tend to grab a
newspaper and recombine names in there.

ooo i am not sure, i'll look that up though. I quite like
the idea myself, make sme think of thousands of these
butterflies on some great advanture through dessolate and
dead places to reach whatever is at the end.

I chose Francis Cole for real name link reasons. Cole for
black, black for death etc and Francis for its religous and
philosophical links. Scurlage was just a village i drove
through and loved the name and Jonas just seemed apropriate
for the character. Jonas is wierd because he is based on a
painting and of all the characters he feels the realest.

btw, if the swams of Monarch butterflies are an important
motif in your story, it might be a good idea to do some
extensive research into the little buggers yourself.

I mean, not read some articles on the net, really dive into
it. it can help you come up with a lot of good material.

They aren't so important in a factual sense. I mean they
first appear in dreams. They are more of a symbol or a sign.

you just were asking if people could give you information if
they have it!

that literally means you'd like more info, and I'm saying,
if you're taking writing this story seriously, it pays off
doing some research yourself.

No you're right and i will. I already have a list of books i
need to trawl from the library. What i was asking for here
was more things that might not be in books, or at least not
in books i am likely to look up. I wouldn't have known about
the scandanavian moth thing if you hadn't have mentioned it.
Tid bits all add up :D

you'd probably come across it in those books, though. :P

but really, I bet it's a myth that occurs in many cultures.

on a random side note....

"Butterfly" in English

Middle English buterflie, Old English buttorfleoge
(written citation 1000 C.E.)

The Oxford English Dictionary notes some old Dutch words
"botervlieg" and "boterschijte", and conjectures that
butterflies' excrement may have been thought to resemble
butter, hence giving the name "butter-shit", then
"butter-fly".

I might also be completely wrong, ofcourse. I remember
reading about it a long, long time ago..

no no i think you're right. I mainly read about the mexican
myth but in ancient greek myth the butterfly often
represents the soul etc.

You're also right about the reasearch heh

" According to Mircea Eliade's Encyclopedia of Religion, "In
Madagascar and among the Naga of Manipur, some trace their
ancestry from a butterfly. According to the Pima of North
America, at the time of beginning the creator, Chiowotmahki,
assumed the form of a butterfly and flew over the world
until he found a suitable place for mankind. The Maori of
New Zealand believe that the soul returns to earth after
death as a butterfly, and in the Solomon Islands a dying
person, who has a choice as to what he will become after
death, often chooses to become a butterfly. In Islamic
Sufism, the moth that immolates itself in the candle flame
is the soul losing itself in the divine fire."

Harking back to the ancient Greek Psyche as butterfly, there
is an interesting coincidence in Aztec and Mayan mythology.
Itzpapalotl is the goddess of the Obsidian Butterfly, which
is to say, of the soul embedded in stone. The seemingly
antinomian idea is that the free butterfly/soul is released
from the body by the sacrificial blade of obsidian, and
simultaneously captured or contained in it. Itzpapalotl is a
counterpart of the god Tezcatlipoca of the Smoking Mirror;
"tezcat" means "obsidian knife". The butterfly is also an
attribute of Xochipilli, the god of flowers and vegetation,
and is also associated with flickering firelight. (I suppose
these names are Nahuatl.)"

well, I'll be damned. I didn't know that.

did you know that the American 'cookie' comes from the Dutch
word 'koekje' (which indeed means biscuit or cookie)?

I think I got that from Stephen Fry in QI..

I doubt its scandinavian, i've never heard of it least.
Still, its pretty interesting to read about that stuff. The
really fascinating thing about old scandinavian
mythology/religion is that i think the vikings had a pretty
laid back/humorous aproach to the whole thing. Some people
believe that the vikings became christians only so it would
be easier for them to trade with other people. Its really
funny to see early scandinavian depictions of jesus. Made in
gold, with a He-man like body. The vikings didnt want some
wimp to lead them!
