I'm leaving on Tuesday evening for a 3 month (?) trip. I'm so scared, and underprepared, I haven't even got my rucksack sorted yet, I can't decide which one. I'm flying into Bangkok, and have a return flight from Singapore in September. I've got a little trek thing booked to break me in the first week but apart from that there is a vast expanse of no plans. Anyone got any tips/experiences/anything?? :D Also, I'm trying to fill my ipod up with as much new stuff as I can get my hands on. If you could recommend some interesting albums I'd appreciate it, it seems like a perfect time to discover new music. I've just got some Jim O'Rourke. I wish I could just take 3 months' worth of Peel radio shows... |

Well, I told this tip before, but here we go again... A guy sells you Marihuana. You pay him. He goes to the police and sells some info. They pay him. Cops come to you. Option 1: Spend long time in a third world prision. Option 2: Give ALL your cash (credit card, bank accounts...) to the cops in order to avoid prision. |

BTW: I traveled Africa alone and bought Marihuana, but just after some days with the "dealer" walkin' talkin' and becomin' friends... Booked as local guide at first... Traveling alone is one of the best experiences I've had so far... Congratulations, dude. |

I went to Thailand for 2 months and it was the best thing I have ever done. Hearing this makes me jealous. Tuk-Tuk drivers will try and rip you off initially, straight from the airport. You will still probably think its an ok deal until you get used to the currency, but its worth noting. Try and have a hotel to stay in for the first couple of days while you settle in. Bangkok is massive but you want to be heading to the Kao San Road asap. Spend more time in Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phan Ngan (Full Moon Party is a must) and Koh Tao (Beautiful, best place to start diving) as opposed Koh Samui and Phuket (VERY SLEAZY COMMERCIAL PLACES). Watch out for: . Drugs, on the way to the full moon party we were searched by army officers who had guns and were pretty thorough. They will either bribe you are put you away. If you must get any heres the rule of thumb; NEVER buy it off a Thai. Buy it off someone whos travelling and then be VERY careful where you smoke/take it. . Ladyboys (theyre very convincing) . Red bull - 10p in a medicine bottle and it aint fizzy. Wicked stuff. . Tuk Tuk drivers at night - they get commision for taking you to dodgy places so know where you want to go and be clear. Dont end up down a a dark alley like we did on the first night. Also try and get up to Kanchanaburi - we did treking, kayaking in lagoons, elephant riding, and I even stroked a tiger there! Immense. All that cost about £10! Dont ever disrespect the monarchy there. Never lose face. Dont stand on a coin/note face up (like I did on day one). Watch the Beach again. But dont take it too seriously. |
