so, my girlfriend is like, "hey mr. quoth, since it's our
year anniversary of dating and mating... and since you are
getting me a nice big fat rock on a ring, and since i don't
know what to get you... could you help me out in picking out
something for your beat making?"

and i was like, "i'm going to have to research." we had
spent like two weeks looking for a sexy ring for her. i'm
happy that i can say that :)

is the kaoss pad that cool, or not? i don't want my lady to
see me disappointed. for the price of a new kaoss pad, it
looks damn well worth it.

just thought i'd ask you peeps.

The KP2 is awesome, I have one. However it might not be for
everyone. If you plan on doing live shows or something with
video, get the new Kaos Pad Entrancer (yeah very gay name i
know). Otherwise stick with the KP2

Pros:

- The best thing about the Kaos pad is the touch pad
obviously. It's nice to have detailed/live control over your
FX.

- It also has 2 small memory slots for recording short
samples as long as it passes through the KP2 first. Samples
than can be altered with certain fx banks.

- Tap/BPM button. For finding out those pesky IDM bpms. This
will also let your choosen FX sync up to the appropriate
rhythm/bpm. Also try entering a different BPM for
experimental stuff.

- Midi in/out. Use your KP2 as a midi controller, hooray.

- 8 save slots to quickly access your favorite effects.

Cons:

-Fx/Sounds might sound cheesy to some. You can't edit them
other than manipulating the touch pad and lowering/raising
the wet/dry ratio.

-Only 2 slots for samples. Short samples.

-You can only use Line/Phono/Mic at different times.
Example: You have music comming throught the line but you
want to flip it to Mic so you can put a delay on your voice
and say something to the crowd. Well as soon as you flip it
the music will mute and wont be heard again till you flip
the switch back.

- Only 8 slots to save your favorite effects.

I like the KP2. The pad feels better than any other of those
touch sensitive control surfaces of the same design. The
effects are decent, but the sounds and beats and stuff are
absolute shit. As well, the vocoders are pretty useless.
However, its almost worth it alone for the live time
stretching and sample manipulation effects in the last ten
banks.

As for the sampler, I kind of wish it stored samples so you
can have a couple that you actually just held on to. I have
gotten some amazing loops before, and the fact that the
sampler has no simple trim or memory after its turned off,
kind of makes me bitter about it. It has knobs. I don't see
why you can use them to set start and end points. Also, it
would kind of be nice to configure the effects a bit more.
You have two axeses to play with, but otherwise the effects
are presets. In a perfect world, it would come with a more
modular setup that you could alter with a computer or
something :(

But its great as a live effect. And its fun. I have some
great sounding instruments, but nothing seems to give me as
much joy when I really get down to it interfacewise. I looks
nice too, and never fails to impress friends. My girlfriend
has no interest in making music, but she always likes
playing with it. Its always nice to have an instrument your
girlfriend likes to play with.

I thought the Entrancer was the VJ-oriented video thing and
not the follow up to the KP2 (although I might have
completely the wrong end of the stick).

I've got the Kaoss Pad 1 and it's pretty good. None of the
effects can be described as "studio quality", but it is good
for live use, particularly when DJing. It's also pretty good
(not to mention little-used) as a midi controller. Having
the x control resonance and y controlling cutoff on a synth
is great for "one handed acid" (rather than needing 2 hands
to manipulate 2 rotaries). If they sorted out automatic
looping (like a cycloops) for various lengths on the
sampler, it'd be a near-perfect "all in one" DJ tool.
