[noob question] multitrack tape recorders

how exactly do they work?

i know it may seem like a silly question, but i've never
used one and i'm curious how exactly they work?

i mean, say i get hold of a 4 track tape recorder....and i
record drums on track one, can i record a synth line on
track two but still be able to hear my drums on track one?

i'm contemplating doing all recording onto tape, but i dunno
if it will be as flexible as i mean above. can anyone help?

If it's a four track cassette recorder, the record head
records mono on the left of Side A, two right of Side A,
three right of Side B and four left os Side B so it uses all
the tape and it all isolated but you can get some 'bleed'
from other tracks as it's all magnetic and that.

but it'll be nothing useful

ohhh i see, i thought it'd do some trickery like that...so i
would be able to listen back to track one while i recorded
track two?
:)

i've just seen some 8 track tape recorders....hown do those
work my knowledgable friend?

The same way but the tape is wider. I used an 8 track ages
ago and it was great! Limiting in a good way but still
loads of scope. Pick up an 8 track up from e-bay, it's a
much more musical way of doing things than staring at a
screen. The results will be apparent.

i really would like to spend the time and effort of actually
using the machines i have to their full potential, rather
than slaving them all to my computer.

triggering my 909 via MIDI is very easy. point and click.
but its boring. i've been doing point and click programming
for years.

i admit, computers have brought a lot to the table in terms
of sequencing and what you can do. but you can get along
with just the little (or big) boxes themselves, and that's
what i wanna do :)

Honestly, in my opinion I wouldn't bother with any midi to
cv things. It's counter productive for me. It's more fun
and I actually get things done if I play with the machines
as they are and record them, at least you capture some sort
of 'performance'. One of the main pro points for hardware
is tactility, otherwise it's wings are clipped. You can
fanny around after in the computer etc. after but it's much
better to have some 'oxygen' or 'life' into it at the
beginning.

my plan is to have temp critical things like drum machines
and my 303 and 202 sync'd to my Machinedrum for MIDI clock,
just so everything is in time.

my nord and my girlfriend's microKORG can be played by their
respective keyboards

as long as i can get everything slaved to the machinedrum i
think i'll be sorted :D

i also recommend the eight-track reel recorder. i would buy
one in a second if i could afford one. tape rules.

The machine drum is really tight but the drift of the 909
which changes every bar also adds something but I'll shut up
now. I'm going to advise you to wear a lab coat and triple
the strength on your glasses perscription in a moment.

yeah, just make sure you have all the digitally-timed things
recorded at the same time, because you really can't overdub
that stuff.

JivverDicker

i've purchased a v4 EEPROM for my 909 which fixes the MIDI
sync drift issue, so i'm gonna be getting that installed
soon

hehe but the glasses cut my throat as i eat them

r40f

i would LOVE to get hold of a reel-to-reel machine, but i
think that would be very very costly for me. and anyways the
whole cheap-and-dirty character of standard casette tape
appeals to me :)

i don't think there are any cassette tapes that give you
eight real tracks, though. i think four is the most.

i have a four track and it's quite great. it should be a
prerequisite for anyone who wants to learn recording.

anyway, jivverdicker knows what he's talking about here and
i totally agree

Hey! I wear glasses when I'm in the Lab, it wasn't a dig.

i record 98% of my music on a cassette 4 track. i love it,
don't want anything else. don't like the idea of recording
to a harddrive. get yourself a good one and have fun.

had a tascam 414mkii since 1999. i just bought
the next step up (which is out of production) on ebay for $100
practically new a few weeks ago. i love it. i highly
recommend either one for starting out.

ebay search:
tascam 414mkii
