so yeah, that makes tagging important. i don't like
categorizing into genres. well except for the distinction
between classical, electronica, pop, jazz. that's as far as
i'll ever go

I'm curious how others here organise their MP3's; whether
they have a consistent way of structuring files/folders
inside genres or years or whatnot, or whether they don't
give a shit about the files but rely entirely on a media
library and file tagging (such as iTunes, etc) to organise
their music.

Genre seems the most logical choice (as in, something like
"\Music\Ambient\Aphex Twin\SAW II\Disc 1\01 Cliffs.mp3" -
but genres are so bloody mixed these days so it's hard as
hell to categorise an album.

If you have a large'ish collection and do something that
works well, I'd love to hear about it.

artists put in alphabetical order, artist folder with
albums. organising according to genres - that would be a
nightmare to me since some ....or even many artists or
albums i listen to - are "multi-genre". e.g. i'd have to
search aphex twin in folders : "ambient" ? "idm" ? too much
trouble with genres.

or in which "genre folder" should i put FSOL ? nightmare.

tagging - sure. i use tag&rename cause i'm a last.fm maniac.

p.s. i'm so happy i can post again, for about half an hour i
couldn't. the "you're posting too frequently" bug attacked
me.

what the hell happened to the server just then? it seems
the time went back half a hour or something - notice how my
first post is actually the 3rd on this page (with a later
timestamp)? godel didn't create this thread.

what happened, did a server administrator change the
server's time twice or something?

also: i am curious how many out there are relying on
application media libraries (i.e. itunes), but won't adopt
such a system myself. i'm guessing that most do.

i find a single tier system of organisation (all
artists/albums in a single library) too limiting, and
additionally prefer to organise based on files/folders
rather than purely by tags for a number of reasons.

i used to have all my mp3s organised into folders by artist,
then by album, then in the file name i had name and track
number. i wouldn't use mp3 tags at all.

now, i totally leave the folders and filenames and use my
itunes music library. i hate sorting music by genre, theres
no point, i have artist, album and year.

I use the format "My Music\Artist\Album\##.Track Title.ext".
For multi-disc sets I put a disc number prefix "D#-" on the
filename. Compilations go in the "My Music\Various"
directory. Tracks that weren't released on an album or a
compilation but were still available on the artist's website
or something like that go in a "My Music\Artist\Unsorted
Tracks" directory.

For tags, I usually get them from Freedb when I rip a CD,
but sometimes I have to edit things manually (especially on
compilations, where the artist is usually "Various Artists"
and the track titles include the actual artist name). Most
of my files are tagged with the artist, track title, album,
track number, year, and genre. I only use broad
descriptions for genre, like Electronic, Hip-Hop, Rock, etc.
