A friend of mine who for the longest time has turned off
any kind of electronic music as soon as he heard it has
finally asked if i can make him some CDs of some Warp and
other stuff. Ive got most of it covered but am not sure what
material to use for a couple of artists. I dont want to
scare him off of finding out about some cracking music cos
its too much of a jump for him. This is a guy whose life
STILL revolves around Oasis. Any suggestions for Autechre (i
was thinking Anvil Vapre) Squarepusher (Budakhan Mindphone &
Hard Normal Daddy were my ideas) and Luke Vibert (I was
gonna start with Wagon Christs Tally Ho!) would be muchly
appreciated. Thanks people!

theres a lot of things i want to put on but if he doesnt
like it after a few tracks he wont be interested in the
artist. gantz graf might be a bit too much for him. I gave
him drukqs already and Richard D James album which he liked
and ive given him Sheath, a couple of braindance
compliations, some Modeselektor, some DMX Krew (which he
hated) and some BIYC stuff (his comment "im surprised they
let you put your shit out on there, this is alright stuff!"
such a loving friend!)

I'd go for "chiastic slide" over "incunabula". it's a better
album, really.

ICBYD got me into electronic music.

I bet Jackson or Prefuse would go over well, though.

Definitely catchy stuff. Nothing abstract. Thats usually the
case with people slowly getting into electronic music.

Some of the suggestions in this thread are already great.
Start off the mix with the black dog - raxmus and end it
with autechre - cipater. Now just fill the middle!

i think you should find him some artists he will like,
otherwise you'll just have accomplished that he thinks
electronic is ok instead of having won over another soul
i don't know what he could be into
maybe give him ae peel sessions

show him some less extreme IDM tracks first, like
windowlicker, and most of boards of canada.

offline dave_g from United Kingdom on 2006-03-26 08:09 [#01867503]

start with 2 boc tracks, 1st something from TCh,
2nd something from MHTRTC.
Then goto:
:jimmy edgar-access rhythm- urban outake
:aphex-icbyd-alberto balsam
:squarepusher-ultravisitor-tetra sync
:ae- incunabula -bike
: aphex - rdj album -corn mouth
: SP-hard normal daddy - beep street
:plaid - spokes -zeal
:aphex- come to daddy- bucephalus bouncing ball

maybe add some short snippets of other bits in between that
as transistions and add some other tracks by different
people. more vocal stuff wouldbe good i think. some !!!
would help.

I would think probably your best bet is to use more melodic
stuff, less glitchy, drum orientated or whatever. not
minimal. something with a beat and a rhythm to start.

good choice of tracks, theres so many though that i would
want them to hear. my approach would probably be to put my
whole Warp rack in a briefcase and let them borrow it for a
few weeks. cant go wrong that way

warp is for beginners if you
dont like artificial intelligence
you arent gonna like any idm

punk kids might like panacea
or ... i was just gonna say jazz
kids might like full cycle or
metalheadz but are there rly
any jazz kids jazz is ultra
underground basically.

offline thatne from United States on 2006-03-26 11:59 [#01867611]

i know panacea and those arent
warp but i just meant getting them
ushered into the electronic scene
which imo is the premier fam.
