UPDATE: KOREA AND JAPAN ADVANCE!

KOREA UPSETS JAPAN IN THIRD GAME (which, incidentally did
not really count because both teams had already advanced)

i think japan was just playing half-assed to save up for
their skill for the next round

POOL B STARTS TUESDAY

AMERICA MEXICO CANADA SOUTH AFRICA

my predictions: america and mexico shall advance

p.s. Korea has the sweetest jerseys

6-0 right now

if the mexico game stays this way and america wins without
letting a whole bunch or runs tomorrow, it's like america
and mexico will advance on the three way tie breaker
(america, mexico, canada)

'TIE-BREAKING PROCEDURES

Teams will be ranked by winning percentage in Round 1, with
the top two teams in each pool advancing to Round 2. Teams
will be ranked by winning percentage in Round 2, without
regard to the results of Round 1, with the top team in each
pool advancing to the Semifinal round. In both rounds, ties
shall be broken in the following order of priority:

1. The winner of head-to-head games between the tied
teams;
2. The team allowing the fewest runs per nine innings
(RA/9) in head-to-head games between the tied teams;
3. The team allowing the fewest earned runs per nine
innings (ERA) in head-to-head games between the tied teams;
4. The team with the highest highest batting average
(AVG) in head-to-head games between the tied teams;
5. Drawing of lots, conducted by WBCI.

Note: Standings and Tie-Breaking Procedures are based on
International Baseball Federation rules.'

Update: Mexico beats Canada 9-1

Canada can advance if and only if America loses to South
Africa tomorrow.

and South Africa scores less than 15 runs.

POOL C:
Puerto Rico and Cuba both advance

Pool D:
Dominican Republic and Venezuela both advance

ROUND 2:

POOL 1 - Korea, Japan, Mexico, United States

POOL 2 - Cuba, Venezuala, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic

My predictions: Pool 1 - Japan and United States / Pool 2 -
Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic

Next Game - Sunday March 12th Cuba vs Venezuela 1pm ET on
ESPN Deportes (re-aired March 13th 2am ET on ESPN2)

First Set Round 2:

America defeats Japan 4-3 [This was a bit of a tainted win.
A bad call by an ump overturned a sac fly run scored by
Japan in 8th, taking the 4th run they had scored back and
giving them their 3rd out, ending the inning with one man
left on base. The replay that I saw showed the runner
waited until the ball was caught to tag, but I would be
interested in seeing a different angle]

Korea defeats Mexico 2-1

Cuba defeats Venezuela 7-2

Puerto Rico defeats Dominican Republic 7-1

(i wonder if xltronic hates me constantly bumping this
thread since I am the majority of the posts in it)

OMG XLTRONIC ANOTHER UPDATE!!

Dominican Republic and Cuba [who beat Puerto Rico yesterday
mainly because of an error by PR] advance

Undefeated Korea advances

From what I just saw as far as RA/9 between Japan, America,
and Mexico:

Mexico cannot advance off of a tiebreaker if they beat
America
America has to beat Mexico to advance, they would also lose
in tiebreaker
Japan should advance if Mexico beats America

Japan deserves to advance and America doesn't. Can't blame
America for the awful call though. I'm not cheering for my
shoddy country if they advance.

GO DOMINICAN!
GO JAPAN! (but i like you too korea)

Yesssssssssssssssssss Mexico won, eliminating America

Japan and Korea advance and shall play each other. Winner
will advance to final. As with Dominican Republic vs Cuba.

My country showed a piss poor performance all throughout
this tournament.

Horrible choice of the management putting Dontrel Willis up
against Canada (a team w/ only one lefty, Jason Bay) and
starting him against Korea (where side-arms and submarine
style pitching is more common)

Way to go you overpaid weenies

Dominican Republic vs Cuba is on right now

ESPN and ESPN deportes

LAZY_TITLE if anyone wants to watch in on mlb gameday,
it's a play by play setup without video (but i'm sure
judging by this thread nobody wants to)

Also, Vlad Guerrero (aka ghetto booty) is now back on the
Dominican team but is not playing today. He most likely
will play in the final (hells yeah they better be in it).

Three of his cousins died in a car crash a few days before
the tournament so he withdrew.

Korea vs Japan is on tonight at 10pm on ESPN/ESPN deportes

I DON'T KNOW WHO TO CHEER FOR IN THAT GAME!!!!!!!

Cuba defeats Dominican Repubic (unfortunately)

Well now I don't think I really care who wins the Korea
Japan game. I just want Cuba to lose. Korea probably has a
better shot at it, but I like Japan more.

If Dominican won I definitely thought they'd lose to either
Korea or Japan because of the difference in playing styles,
but Cuba stands a better chance since they are balanced with
small ball and some big hitters.

I hate Cuba's catcher.

JAPAN DEFEATS KOREA 6-0

One of the best baseball games I've ever watched.

There were no runs scored until the 7th, when Japan got 5,
then scored again once more in the 8th. It was a great
defense and pitching battle, but Japan wore down Korea.

Sadaharu Oh called a pinch hitter in and started Japan's
climb onto the board in the 5th.

Japan is going to destroy Cuba on Monday (Monday 9pm EST
ESPN/ESPN Deportes)

Japan is my country away from my country. When this
tournament started I was considering cheering for them
because I probably owe more to my life to Japan than
America.

I'm still probably going to buy a Korea hat because they are
sweet and they are still an incredible team. One could
easily argue they are the best out of the tournament even
though they were eliminated. People really underestimated
them, including myelf, but I believe they won the last
Olympic level baseball tournament.

p.s. I secretly work for ESPN

I hope cuba wins, and then donates the prize to the katrina
victims, such a slap in the face for W.

I just find it incredible how can Cuba be so good in this
when they don't have the concept of professional sport (that
is playing spor for a living)

FINAL OOPDATE!

JAPAN DEFEATS CUBA 10-6 (yessssss)

I wasn't aware there was a prize OK, what is it?

I was a bit suprised Cuba did as well as they did. They are
quite dedicated, but I still hate their catcher. Yulieski
Gourriel is quite the upcoming star. I wonder if anyone
has/andor/is going to defect?

Yay Japan

yeah there is a prize. I don't know where were you during
all the controversy about US not wanting to let cuba play in
the world classic, because u.s. laws don't allow for u.s.
money go to cuba. but there was quite a fuzz. google it.

"The United States Treasury Department has denied Cuba a
permit to take part in the event, saying that as teams will
receive money from their participation in the tournament,
that would violate of the terms of the economic embargo
against the Caribbean country.

In order to offer options, Cuba has proposed to donate any
earnings associated with their participation in the
tournament to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina."

ahh so i see. i remember stuff about Cuba originally not
being allowed to play, but i just figured it was because of
the bad relationship between the US and Cuba.

well, now i feel a bit bad for rooting against them.
