Sounds a bit boring I guess with 3 clips but I would love to hear how some of you feel about the music at a first quick listen.. It's 3 clips from an album I worked on before I got busy, Now im getting insecure if I shall finish them or not (the music makers might understand what I mean eh.)
The music is my basic drill stuff, sort of inspired by the more sweet basic drill like sp's feed me weird things, I tryed to focus allot on "real" drum programming and not the glitchy vst stuff that I guess is quite common these days, and there's offcourse allot of focus on melodies and harmonys. So yeah, try it and tell me how you feel, I welcome critisism on both the music and how the individual tracks are mixed.
clips are on my zebox: here

clip1: you should definately finish this even though it almost seems finished already.. you just need to play it out!
clip2: a bit cheesy imo. it kind of has potential, but to make it better, you'd have to change the track entirely, and that would just be the same as making a new track with the same sounds and melodies only a bit less cheesy.. if you know what I mean...
clip3: awesome! that trumpet-ish sound is awesomely manipulated so that even though it sounds like a synthed trumpet it doesn't matter!
what are these "glitchy vst drums" everyone's hating on these days? what does it sound like?

hah, thanks for taking your time mate. I understand how you feel about clip2, and well, at this point im not sure of anything so ill see what happens with it. Glad you liked the 1 and the 3! the trumpetish sound in clip 3 is actually a real trombone (just recorded some notes here and there) and it's probably the fact that they play at an unaturally high pitch that makes them sound unaturall =D.
about the glitchy vst drums, dowload the "buffer override" here and then use it way too much all the time on all your breaks to make them sound really crazy. That's just an example. I do use vst's myself, I have even used the buffer override but I think that you need to use everything "wisely" otherwise things just get a bit too dull, at least in my opinion. But hey, thanks for listening again

I think the sounding synthed thing comes from the sound plus the other sounds that interfered or something...
I don't think I'll bother with that vst.. I don't think it'll be compatible with the way I do drums, but I checked the samples, and I'm still not sure what people are on about...

It could very well be that it is the messed up mix that caused the trombone to sound synthy.. I dont mind that it sound synthy though. But ive had such a long break from working on this album so once I get back at it ill most likey totally re-mix all the tracks aswell as change allot of details etc, I just cant help it. I feel that I develope too fast at the mixing stage, it doesnt take long untill you discover misses here and there that was caused by tired ears... being a perfectionist sucks =D so im guissing that the trumbone might turn out to sound different in the end, for good or for bad. Ow ill shut up now!

i don't think clip 2 is that much of a cheese fest, perhaps just the chords that have a slight tang. and i wouldn't say these were short clips either :)
they all sound worth continuing with, to me. perhaps try and move away from the chord-per-bar sequences though. i dunno, competely upto you, but do make sure to post the completed tracks.

sorry for tricking you with the "short" part hah =D
ye, I totally agree with you about the chord-per-bar part, now when ive had the time to get a better overveiw of my recent drill stuff ive realised that I do that allot.. the PLOM,PLOM,PLOM,PLOM chord stuff, and I know that I need to at least try to go away from that if I wanna develope my melodies and harmonies. Good observation!
And I will post the finished album here once it's 100 percent done, you guys are my only audience hah =D thanks for listening, It feels good to hear that you find it worth finishing, I will keep that in mind and get right back at it once im done with all my crappy practical projects... thanks.

I like the first one. to bad it started fading out when it got good.
the second one is quite obviously SP influenced. not bad though. i dig it. third one is cool to. the trumpet sound should sound more fake. I mean for a trumpet you should let a real trumpetist play it.
not use an emulation that sounds only half like a real trumpet. either go for a real one or make it more plastic-ish fake sounding.
I like it though. love the chords and stuff. post all three of them when you're done

thanks a bunch, I know the first track is a bit of a tease I guess.. gotta save some for the real thing hah =D I understand what you mean about the trumpet (that is a real trombone hah) and I will see how it turns out in the final mix (will keep your thoughts in mind for later use), that specific clip is a very unfinished mix at this state, the amen is too sharp, the bass is too muddy etc. And I will spam the finished album here so you will get to hear the finished version even if it might take a while. Thanks allot for listening. Good evenenening =D

I recorded a fairly wide varity of notes and bends and weird transients and stuff of my own trombone, had my mother to operate the instrument while I monitored the recording =) I dont know how to play it (and when I try I almost pass out from an astma attack), I got the old trombone from my grandpa when I was a kid, been in the closet untill just recently. The trombone doesnt play much at it's natural tone range in that track and that might be a part of the reason for it's synthy sound, Drunken mastah thought it was the mix that messed the sound up, I simply dont know at this point (have to dig back in to a rather complex mix to find out and I dont have the time to do that right now...)

Thanks for listening, the drums is a hard part, at least mix wise... I mean, setting the levels is really hard overall in my opinion, it's always a matter of taste and that just makes it harder.. I want my drums to be at a fairly medium level, or slightly under medium. Im not sure if ive managed to put them right quite yet though. I dont have any monitors I can trust, so im mixing allot on headphones and then im running around trying to get a good idea of the mix on an as wide varity of speakers and sound system as possible.. wich is both interesting and a pain in the arse =D

ah yes i forgot to check these the other day.
clip1: happy fun time. Its ok, not sure what to say about it.
clip2: I like the intro. Very lush and visual, open and clean sounding. The drums and melodies on this one are way more interesting than the first one. I actually think your style sounds better when its really busy like this. I think you mentioned above about the 'plomp' chords, which need a variety in their rhythm, but the other melodies and acid shit is awesome. Keep making it epic!
clip3: I like the way it starts out. Lots of layers and cool sounds. Trumpet makes it unique and it actually fits with the rest of what is going on. The end is nice, but as soon as that trumpet comes in you know where the rest of the track is going (despite the fade-out). You could extend that quieter part (with that cool rhythm) and mess around with it for a good 2 minutes or so - that way you have time to forget about the beginning part of the track. Then you move on to the trumpet phrase and it would be refreshing rather than 'oh here we go again with the trumpet'.
Not sure if all this made sense. Nigel is right, 2 is the best.

aight, thanks for listening mate. But im not sure im following you about clip3, did you mean that you think I should go back to that more "idm" rythm at 1:25 ? before the more fufft up part comes in ? wether you ment that or not that's a pretty good idea.. =D but at the same time im having trouble seeing that work (most likey becouse im allready used to the way it is...) change is bad (hard) =D but thanks for taking the time to listen. thing are good for you I hope ?

yeah you can go back to the 1:25, or any other phrase before 1:25 would work too.
Things are going good for me, I just got a letter saying I made it to a 3.5 grade average but I'm not letting it go to my head because its a community college, lol.
