i just now set up my gmail account with a number of labels and rules, so that emails from myspace are archived and labelled immediately, same with emails from last.fm, daft.ie, etc etc etc.
however - when I receive an email from one of these services, gtalk doesn't pop up a box saying "you have new mail" because the email is automatically archived (moved from the inbox).
This just happened - however, it might've happened merely because i was logged into and navigating my gmail account at the time of receipt of the email.
Does anybody know how all of this works - and if it works as i suspect, how to configure gtalk to notify me when email is received from these services?

well, you need to establish whether gtalk acknowledges all unread emails, or simply unread emails in ur main inbox.
if you've got another email account, set that up as you have done with myspace (&...etc) and then send ur gmail account an email.
Does anybody know how all of this works? in a word - no.
:)

yeah, i just tested it and gtalk only acknowledges email that arrives in the inbox. so i've changed my email rules accordingly, so that it just labels incoming email.... i'll investigate whether there's a way to set up timed archiving (let's say, after 5 days archive all mail that's labelled with ...) or whether i'll have to do frequent spring cleaning, doing searches for labelled mail and archiving it by hand.
but yeah. bogey!
