Anyone hear like them? I'm on about the 80's band that did
Party Fears Two and Club Country here, not some Missy Elliot
producers.
They sound like what Joy Division would have been if they
had a much higher singer. Billy McKensie (hope I spelt that
right) was a great singer, shame he comitted suicide.
Try Sulk if you want to hear them. I'm downloading Fourth
Drawer Down at the moment. Very dark, crazy in places, but a
good album so far.

fantastic band, and hugely underrated.

Sulk is so freakin awesome, must-hear. The ''operatic''
vocals just wail steady, the beats are nuts too. I wasn't
aware the singer killed himself, that just sucks.

Yeah, bought a load of over-the-counter drugs and took an
overdose 9 years ago after his mum died. Wonder what he'd be
doing if he was still alive.

God, I really do love this band now. Check out the early
Peel Sessions, this album is AMAZING.

I'm not dissin missy, some of her stuff is great. It's just
the Associates were probably way better than some producers
for Missy Elliot.

Yeah, just listening to "Club Country". No band now would
have the balls and style to do something like this.

Found the vid.

You mean this? cos it's nothing like what they were really
like.

I'm on about the performance, not the notes. Apparently
during Sulk they filled the studio with balloons. Not for
helium for Billy's voice, just for general fun. Also:
"Rented guitars got pissed on" and rented drums were "filled
with water".

Yeah duh, sowwy.
Yeah, you've got to listen to the albums to really get into
what they were about musically. It's great that something
like that could get onto TOTP though. "White Car in Germany"
and "Q Quarters" are prob the best songs.

Holy shit, if you can find their set at The Marquee in 1980,
download it asap, it's so frantic, hectic and powerful.
Sulk-era the Associates were a wild animal.

I'm very very tempted to upload this if enough people are
interested.

I wouldn't take the piss out of a guy who committed suicide
years ago.

Such a shame, he was such an amazing singer.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of that. That's sad to hear.

The lead singer appears to be quite the happy fellow in
those old videos so that is kind of surprising to me.

Yeah, he couldn't handle the death of his mum and overdosed
on painkillers I think. It's a real shame cos he started to
do some quite big collabs at that time and could easily now
be a big name again.

Associates are one of the most underrated bands of all time.
End of.
