Are you talking in the over egged 'Drill and bass' arena or
in general?

the plinkety-plonk piano bits were nice. I liked those.

although that avril-thingy gets a lot more praise than it
deserves, I'd say.

that's like someone from the US using the word "mate" - a
bit embarrassing.

opinions aren't you?

so basically you wanted to say that and don't want to hear
the opinion of anyone else.

which is fine ofcourse, it's the solid foundation the
internet is built on, but the thread title might suggest
otherwise..

You can top that technically if you chose to and had a lot
of patience. I can't think of who I'm quoting but.... 'it's
90% inspiration, 10 % perspiration' give it a go.. your
emulations are great but if you add yourself in there it
would be lovely.

well... it was my first aphex album

and basically the album that made me enter this idm
(whatever you call it) world... yeah, I know I came late...
but here I am

about drukqs:

loved it since first listen, love it still

it makes me feel all nostalgic too

I like the way its made, with that jekill/hyde style

melodies, great beats, some real idm anthems... essential I
would say

it was some kind of summary of all his abilities to hat
point, and it had several styles, but still made a perfect
body of work

some say it had old tracks in it... probably, but he
released them in the correct moment then

one of his best works imo

I'll never understand the praise drukqs gets. I think it's
OK, but a masterpiece? Isn't it too uneven to be a
masterpiece? Sure Vordhosbn, Avril 14, and Ziggomatic are
great tracks. But there are a lot of uninspired and plain
filler tracks as well. Something else that frustrates me is
it seems like RDJ intended it to be a "masterwork": it's
takes itself too seriously. RDJ album covers more emotional
bases and is a better album IMO. So's ICBYD. I even prefer
Come to Daddy EP (now that is a tiny masterpiece, and brief,
too).

If one is going to be talking masterpieces, In Sides is a
masterpiece. LP 5 is a masterpiece, probably Chiastic Slide
as well. But not Drukqs, I think. There's no overarching
theme, not much of a coherent mood, not enough standout
tracks.

ICYBD is my personal favorite of his, and second favorite
album out of everything. (Its the first "idm" album I've
ever listened to, though, so I may be biased.)

I think he's saying you sound too much like an Aphex clone
(I have no idea, I haven't heard your music).

saying "nobody has done it" is a bit of a cop out. James is
not some kind of mythical creature. why not try surpassing
Aphex, who cares if you can't actually do it, at least go
for it.

something like that.

lol.

impakt you can slow it with a plugin for winamp or with
Windows media player, i think it includes something to slow
down songs.

I think that slowing the tracks just gives you more
perspective in how the tracks were made.. especially some
insight into the beats. that stuff about "it's a whole new
album", "it is even more insane." it's bollocks. but
probably I'm just saying that because I pointed out about
slowing the tracks first, and no one paid me any attention.
later elusive comes out posting slowed drukqs tracks, and
everyone's like "ooh ahh".

bleah!

it's OK

avril is overrated as qrter says.

i think it's his best overall album. in the beginning i used
to skip the piano stuff, to get to the juice, but after a
while the melodies sunk in, and since then the album has
been one of my favorites, with few, if any, weak tracks.

My opinions on it have changed a bit. Not that anyone really
cares, but heres my two cents. I'm listening to rdj album
alot more and have recently realized that it is aphex twins
masterpiece, NOT drukqs.

I concur with everything said there. I have listened to both
the RDJ album and ICBYD hundreds of times, but everytime I
put drukqs on, I get bored half way through and put
something else on. It just didn't sound as inspired.

And thats all I have to say bout that.

offline duppy from United Kingdom on 2006-02-03 03:43 [#01833252]
Points: 158 Status: Regular

Drukqs is his best album by a country mile. and all the
others are genius too. i remember him saying at the time
that it was released in a 'not quite complete' form because
he lost the mastered songs on a tube so wanted to release
something before the bootlegs turned up. but i've always
thought that was one of his little lies because i later
heard him say, same year, that he thought it was his best
work as he was just better at everything, production,
structure etc than what he used to be. He also said it makes
sense to him to listen to it as a whole, but it probably
won't to anyone else.

It sounds completely perfect to me. it is his masterpiece.
thank you for your attention

I'd for some more melodic drill and bass tracks in the style
of drukqs. Nothing has really touched them in all these
years in terms of atmosphere, tension, drama, memorability
etc...(even if some works have almost matched the complexity
of the drum work.)

i hate drukqs except two or three or four or five songs of
which three are avril 14 and kesson daslef and jynweithek
ylow tunes, one is vordhosbn and another is Orban Eq Trx4

i prefer SAW2

offline staz on 2006-02-03 03:54 [#01833261]
Points: 9844 Status: Regular

Avril is the worst of the piano tracks actually, although
the one with the most "immediate" charm. Kesson Daslef will
always be my favorite out of those, closely followed by
Petiatil.

Drukqs can, of course, be outdone, but I haven't heard
anyone match it yet. Part of what makes it so brilliant to
me is the track sequencing, it's filled with great,
contrasting work and ties the album together perfectly. I
really think it's an amazing dynamic.

Also, it's got his most imaginative and fulfilling melodies
and overall structures. And it feels like his most "real"
album, for some reason. There's something sincere about it,
I like that. It's not just about how marvellous it is
technically, there's an Aphex factor in it that's unique for
him, no matter what.

It IS his best, no doubt about it. RDJ is quite close but
gets boring pretty quick. People who think that ICBYD is
better need to kill themselves.

Or perhaps we had already gotten tired of drill n bass, and
when we heard a new aphex twin album was comming out, we
were expecting something along the lines of windowlicker.
(its still his best song ever, and I would take one
windowlicker over 5 Drukqs anyday)
