Hey, I have to buy a pair of new ones.
Can't afford the Technichs stuff...
Anyone tried the new ones by Stanton?
Any suggestion?

Why have they got to be brand new ones? It's not very
difficult to test/see if a pair are well looked after and
are functioning properly.

Vestax pdx2000s are in the same price bracket as Stantons
and they're my favourite decks.

Hummm...
I've checked, and looks like they don't have pitch
correction function. I mean I can't change the speed without
affecting the pitch. Am I right?

They look great anyway!

Pitch correct? Why? To do that without it being digital is
very difficult and unreliable. As far as doing it analogue
is concerned, what it usually does is turn everything into a
very lo-fi organ or paddy sound. So if you are running your
turntables through digital processing, you are still
brightening the sound, killing most of the benefits that
come with having an analogue turntable.

I get it.
It runs through a digital processor in order to do that.
Yep, didn't first realized...

I've also found this: VRX-2000

Huzzah! Someone else who doesn't like the look of technics,
I thought I was the only one. Quite why 90% of budget decks
emulate the look of 1210s/1200s is beyond me. Straight arm
stantons (any model) in silver are the nicest looking decks
IMO.

Only downside of 2nd hand technics is that because of their
renowned durability/reputation as the best, they hold their
value (good if you're thinking of selling, but bad if you're
buying, obviously). So much so, that I'd be tempted to pay
the extra £100 for a pair of brand new ones (which when I
looked into it 3 years or so back is all it was) if you're
planning on keeping them for a few years.

Unabomber: RE Pitch Correct; as mentioned, if it's digital
(like stanton's top end decks), what's the point in a vinyl
deck? You may as well get a good cd deck instead.

HTFR used to regularly have them (in awful, chavvy colours
like "Ford Fiesta Red" :P), but can't see them in stock
(only chrome). Might be worth giving them a ring. They're
inept spastics with exceptionally poor customer service, but
they may be able to help.

I couldn't afford technics when I first started out so I
bought Gemini PT2000's which are solid and have survived 10
years so far, but they do have their flaws....

The torque on them is considerably less than a Technics
deck, this made it difficult for me for a while when I first
started to get gigs and used 1210's....you get used to the
feel of the turntables you have at home, so all the
scratching and drop mixing practice can be hard to get used
to when confronted with a different set of decks.

My advice: All depend if you want to get gigs...but....save
for longer if you can. Technics or vestax turntables are the
best around and the most common decks found in clubs + if
you get bored of dj'ing...you will get most of your money
back when selling them.

offline unabomber from Palma de Mallorca (Spain) on 2006-01-11 03:59 [#01815995]

I was thinking of using that to slow down some singin'
without affecting the pith...
And the CD deck will come later...I use vinyls.

Anyway, I could end looking for the Pitch Correct button in
any club plates (mostly Technics1200) and gettin' mad!
I'm begining to realize that it's not a good idea to get
acostumed to that feature...

" if you get bored of dj'ing...you will get most of your
money
back when selling them. "

A key point. Everyone who buys decks usually thinks they're
really into it, but in reality around half are not used and
end up gathering dust, before being sold in a year or so's
time.

If you can afford to, get a good deck, second hand. You will
be able to sell if for what you payed for it 2 years down
the line, or at worst lose £25-50. Buy some rubbish brand
new (especially "mid price" decks) and you'll lose hundreds
if you sell.

The other thing is if you buy really awful decks, (Argos'
own brand belt drives, anyone?) you will get so frustrated
by the records falling out of synch, skipping, etc. even if
you're doing nothing wrong, that you'll give up. If you buy
something decent, you know it's your skills that are lacking
and similarly, when you do it right, it sounds perfect.

Forget cheapo decks if you're ever planning on gigging,
aside from fragility, decks with poor tracking are unuseable
in a club environment. I've had people laugh at me due to
records skipping etc. courtesy of gasg equipment. I asked
the bloke who was organising the gig what decks they had, to
see if it was worth taking my own. He said Vestax, so I
(foolishly) thought, "Mint! PDX2000s, I'll take my mixer and
carts and it'll be just like my home setup." The reality was
some ancient vestax decks that I've never seen before/since
and which I thought were belt driven to begin with they were
so lacking in torque. They skipped everytime someone touched
the stage. It was shite.

like.

As to saving for them, don't be disheartened. Took me about
18 months of saving to get mine. The pride of ownership when
I finally got them outstripped that of any car or bike I've
bought.

I saved up so I could afford some second hand 1200s, and
those things are tough so generally i think second hand
would be fine. // but with all the new decks that are out
now, the decision is harder i suppose.

one of my second hand decks was pretty shitty looking as
well, but it still help up well with scratching and
whatever.

There's an important diference between the Technics and the
Vestax ttables, the Tone Arm.
Straight vs in Angle.
I think Technics look better, but I'm used to a straight
tone arm...

Well I can't beleive people prefer the horrible plastic look
of vestax and numark decks over technics!
The 1210 looks like a professional machine, it has
mechanical beauty, like the mechanism of a wind up pocket
watch.
The vestax and numark are like a crappy casio watch, full of
'features', but don't necessarily tell the time any better!
and don't look good.
Ok, enough of the watch analogy!

I have some stanton striaght arm decks, middle price range,
but I have seriously out grown them, so I am going to get
some lovely technics MK3s, the ones with the dipless pitch
and depressed on/off, so it eliminates the two flaws of the
original but still retains all the quality and the looks.

The most gourgous decks I've ever seen are the technics 1210
special edition gold ones.

If you're getting decks then its probably best to get a
vestax, stanton, numark or technics worth a fair amount, you
shouldn't be dissapointed with any of them if you are going
from crap decks, unless you are pre-disposed not to like a
certain type, like I don't like the feel of vestax/numark
"plasticyness".

don't bother with gemini, kam, argos, any belt drive, any
cheap crap. i beleive stanton str880 are cheapest with
pitch correction, but I don't think it sounds great on ANY
deck. just use a pitch plugin on winamp and route mixer send
to line in, then pc output to return on the mixer and there
you go, pitch on any deck, providing your mixer has
send/return fx loop :D

techs are the best turntables.

the other ones just have things you can play with which can
be done way better by having external equipment.. the pitch
lock thingie on those vestaxes sound like a noise remix of
whatever you're playing...

what is the difference between the mk2 and the mk5
anyway? some places it says that mk5 has 16% pitch, but this
doesn't seem to be correct.. other than that, there's a
different coloured light, but is that all? surely, it can't
be..?

offline unabomber from Palma de Mallorca (Spain) on 2006-03-16 06:36 [#01860941]
Points: 3756 Status: Regular

They solved some troubles, the Mk2 seems less acurate in
keepin' the speed locked, the start stop button has been
modified to avoid accidental use...
I think there's more, but can't remember..

The Mk5 has the recessed power so it is harder to
accidentally knock it and power down mid-mix. START/STOP is
same, its power on/off that is different.

It also has a more accurate pitch control, i.e. dipless, so
when you are mixing and you need it very close to the 0% it
never goes from variable to quartz lock, so you dont get
that little dead zone between being quartz locked and being
variable.

When you want to engage the quartz lock you press a button
for 0%

It has more range on the anti skate and the cue lamp has a
longer life.
Just the few tweaks needed to make it the best again.

I am currently working quite a lot of overtime so hopefully
I can join the mk5 club soon :)

Minimal drilling should be required. Just make sure you use
a centre punch to get the hole in the right place and
remove any swarf and crap from the hole. Twist a large drill
bit by hand in the hole to remove any sharp bits after
drilling.

I've never actually done this though, so can't offer any
advice.

I may at some point modify my pmc06 mixer with extra
switches if anyone is interested too. The upfaders have 3
different profiles, selectable from a switch inside the
mixer on the fader board. I intend to mount these externally
to allow on the fly changes, also add anti-pop pull down
resistors to the line/phono switch.

I was going to add send/return, but realised that one can
use the spare headphone socket for send and line in for
return :)
