The party I am going to at New Year is someone from work
who DJ's and I have spoken to him in the past about making
tunes but he has never heard anything I have ever done
(which is probably the only reason he has made this
request). Anyway, he wants me to make a tune the people can
dance to but I dunno if this is going to be OK. These
people are going to be your Cream or Gatecrasher type...so I
don't want to look completely stupid.

Help?

Thanks.

Too many variations/much unpredictability for the masses.
They can dance to quite "out there" music, provided it
consists of predictable loops. Good luck.

So strip the variation out or start again and approach it
differently?

It'll probably have to be longer. Or, at least looped 20
times.

Yeah I thought that too...but I don't want to spend the time
making it longer if it's too shit to bother with anyway.

Oh just do four to the floor beats with sex noises on top.

Yes! That is it. So simple. Thanks.

By all mean have some variation, but sort of do it "8 bar
drum intro, 16 bar presentation of theme, 16 bar repetition
with very slight variation, 16 bar breakdown, 16 bar more
drastic variation of theme, 16 bar main theme, 16 bar
repetition with slight variation, 16 bar main theme, 16 bar
play out"

As with all shite dance music, you should also for each 16
bar section. Have bar 1-3 the same, bar 4 slightly
different. This is for bars 1-11. 12-16 should be slightly
different from the bars in 1-4 and should have a backwards
cymbal or other noticeable (yet subtle) "marker" (it helps
people predict breakdowns/transitions so as not to catch
them off guard, as well as the bloke DJing it).

To make it as DJ friendly as possible, I favour a 8 bar drum
intro (makes beatmixing easier) and the last 8 bars of the
playout to only feature synth/bass and a simplifed version
of the rhythm.

Don't even think about anything other than 4/4 time sig,
with a kick on each fourth note and preferably a bpm of
either 130,133 or 135.

I know this advise is a bit souless, formulaic and
derivative, but that's what most people like when they're
wrecked.
