i've actually been listening to a lot of the Smiths, Johnny
Cash and Radiohead lately. i wonder, is listening to a lot
of depressing music healthy for you? i mean, sure music
makes you sad sometimes, but you can't be happy all the
time. some of the most beautiful music made is perhaps the
most emotional. but doesn't sad music wear on you after a
while? i dunno. i guess i may be depressed and not realize
it.

discuss.

There's not much music I find depressing. Even when the
artist is clearly portraying his/her depressed state of
mind, it doesn't rub off onto me. Joy Division I find a bit
unforgiving sometimes though...

depressive music makes me more comfortable with my
sadness... but of course, precisely because of that, it
makes me less want to get out of it.
so of course it's not really "healthy". a bit like taking a
dose of a drug will make you feel better if you crave for
it, but won't help you curing your addiction.

i'm pretty happy right now, and i haven't been listening to
depressing music for a while (i just did today but that was
for a discovery, and even though the album was good i don't
want to listen to it again now). : )

now i wonder: why do you find depressive music more
beautiful than the rest? maybe i'm weird about this point,
but i personally don't... i like "dreamy" music and stories
the best. i've already found some stories/movies to be too
sad to be beautiful, and i think i could find some music
like that too.

of course, when you're depressed you'll be more likely to
enjoy depressing music and feel nothing for/be annoyed by
happy music... but there is uplifting music too, that makes
you feel better when you're sad... maybe it wouldn't be
enough for real, deep, depression though. : |

i dunno i guess it depends on the mood i'm in - when i'm sad
i want sad music but when i want beats i want faster music.

music is all about moods for me...

(do you prefer faster music with more beats when you're
happy?)

Is it possible to cheer yourself up using music alone?

I mean- whenever I listen to Calypso 1, it never fails to
make me happy. There's somthing about it that just exudes
"feel-goodness".

i would say that about 80-90% of the music i listen to is
"sad" or depressing. even when i'm in a rather good mood i
listen to depressing music. my friend doesn't believe in the
term "drepressing" or "sad" music. he says your own mood
affects the way you interpret the music.

the question here is "how powerful is music, really?"

...music alone, i don't know. it helps a little bit but
there is no magical cure for depression.

Calypso 1? whose track is it?

depends on mental health. if you wanna listen to sad music
all time than probably there is something not too healthy
going on.

thanks : )

i have already felt especially good, and quite durably,
because of music... i don't know if, for example if you had
a heartbreak, music alone would make you feel good again but
music can definitely cheer you up. i couldn't imagine living
without listening to music/without having songs or tunes in
my head.

nps- JMJ is really good I feel at conjuring up emotions
within you;(and not just the usual sad, happy, love ones).

His epic newagesynth style is quite powerful at times with
climaxes and various other musical devices.

Yes, I know what you mean. Music has so much "magic" to it,
ie. there are so many notes, harmonics, air vibrations you
don't here yet you notice when they're not there (im talking
ofcourse about digital and analogue version of track).

The way music can be used to train a pod of dolphins to
react in certain ways. It can make us dance when we doin't
want to etc. music is so intrinsically linked to us(as a
planet) we couldn't live without it. And then- what is
music? I mean how far does one go? I mean how different is
ducks squaking in the lake to a choir in a cathedral, when
it boils down to it?

I guess as long as any creation, music or other wise, stays
in the realm of fiction it's expression or effect on someone
is ok with me, even if pretty fucked up. But entertaining
oneself, getting a brief "high" on a particular emotion much
like tobasco sauce isn't tasty but "fun" to eat, with real
stuff (rotten.com etc) is pretty unhealthy/ and maybe
unethical if there is such things as ethics imo.

I think it's fine... you're gonna be depressed some time in
your life, music or not.

In contrast, there isn't enough music about that makes you
feel really good about yourself... it's all just clever or
cool or sad.
