definately start with their first album, the self titled Black Sabbath because it's the best one instrumentally and atmospherically.
Then if you like that move on to the Paranoid LP because that has the more well known stuff sucha s the title track and other songs like War Pigs and Iron Man.
I love Sabbath, just make sure you start with one of the first two albums and not the later stuff. Albums like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and the ones with Dio as lead vocalist simply aren't up to the same high standard. I don't know much about Ozzy's solo albums I'm afraid apart from the fact his guitarists are Slash and Zakk Wylde - two of the best guitarists of the last 20 years. Check out Wylde's band Black Label Society (particularly the song Queen of Sorrow) because they're currently producing high quality rock music, unlike Sabbath, and are suprising good!

Probably better off getting a Best Of as Sabbath's albums are a bit inconsistent. Goes without saying avoid anything after 1978

I love every damn album album up to Heaven and Hell. I even find merit in the admittedly terrible final two albums, just because they're so misguided and ambitous. They're bad but they're not boring.
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage are my favorites, very stylized and well-produced and arranged stuff, the good kind of flaky. Sabotage in particular is a must, Symptom of the Universe is far more ferocious than anything on their older albums and there's a lot of a strange, twisted epics on there.

Oh and since nobody mentioned it, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman are the essentials for Ozzy's solo career, mainly because of Randy Rhoads. After he croaks, the guitarists get less interesting and he goes around in circles. Great neo-classical influence on the first two albums, and the cheese is kept to a mimimum.

I'd say the first 5 albums are all worthy of purchase, check the 1st DVD as well if you get a chance, some of the live footage is amazing plus you get to hear Tony Iommi saying "let's just def it" in a proper brummy accent

I think I'm one of a very small sect of people who think that the album cover for 'Born Again' is absolutely great and interesting in it's artistic auntorsé! it's been ridiculed by many a critic and I contantly sift through reviews in which they say it's hideous and an eyesore in an otherwise pretty sound album.

it's got some good songs, but the production and all the cheesy synths bother me enough that i don't enjoy it.

I love the "Classic Albums" programme generally, but the Black Sabbath one was really good. They did the Paranoid album and it's great when they solo the tracks. Really top musicians, well worth checking out.
