[advise] What .mp3 player???

okay this is a topic which has probably come up in the past
but in my ignorance I never bothered to read those sorts of
things as I have no knowledge of mp3 players. Now it's my
turn to ask You, rather than trawling through Amazon trying
to make a decision myself, what is the best mp3 player I can
treat myself to this Xmas for my £199 budget? -_-

I don't care for pictures or anything like that, I just want
something which will play 1,500+ songs, has an LSD screen
and can be relied on.

From what I've heard about these things so far most people
have had very mixed experiences regarding all of them,
perhaps you guys can help me out.

iRiver? ipod? ipod nano? Zen micro?
-Thanks in advance.

i reckon you should try to make a decision for yourself,
therefore (under normal circumstances) the purchased product
will have a higher probability of pleasing its merry new
owner.

yes, but as my avatar suggests I'm having a bit of a dilemma
about the whole thing. I can't choose and sortof hope that
by hearing the views of a few people it might sway my
decision.

oh, I reached 2005 posts

If you're going to listen to that New Age music of yours,
you might need an LSD-screen

I agree, and they look nicer than ipods. This is probably
because I've seen so many ipods and felt jealous of people
wielding them in the past that I've come to loath their
appearance and want to have something which does the same
job but looks different. Unique from the crowd. Oh god
that sounds so Emo...

I was leaning towards iRivers until I heard yesterday that
they're incapable of playing an uploaded album in the album
tracklist order. I think they plays songs in alphabetical
order or something ridickulous, ruining the
experience of listening to an album that's meant to flow.

Nano is out of the question if you want to store 1500+
songs. Which is a shame as they are very very good.

I know some people here are far too cool for iPods, but my
3rd generation is still the dog's. I've not had any problems
in 2/3 years (apart from the crappy earphones). If I were
looking for a no-frills but excellent/large storage player,
I'd probably buy a pre-colour ipod off ebay. I don't really
care for the photo function etc (although the extra battery
is very nice)

thanks, I might look into pre-colour ipods on Ebay. I think
they've steadily got worse as they've added novelty crap to
them with pics and shite which noone really cares about and
upped the price for the privelege. Also I think I'd lose an
ipod nano if I owned one as they're just too small
and thin!

another major issue for me is Volume. The original ipods
didn't have a very good spectrum of sound volume and some
music has to be heard loud. I only really expect the
same volume settings as a discman, any idea if the new ipods
have fixed this?

Well its really not an issue. Yes there is a volume cap on
(European) iPods which really really sucks. But this is just
a software cap - the hardware is perfectly capable of
playing very loudly.

WHICH IS WHY, happily, young programming chaps have written
software to override the volume cap. I use a program called
EuPod, which is just a few clicks, and you can increase the
volume to ridiculous, earphone damaging levels. I have it
moderately loud as I also like loud music. So its really not
an issue at all - all my friends suffer with crappy quiet
volume out of ignorance. Its especially sucky if you like
quieter music (ambient etc)... so yeah, download the free
software and make your ipod as loud as you want.

I agree that the novelties are pretty useless so far. The
photo function looks good, but I know no-one who uses it at
all... its an MP3 player, for God's sake.

"its an MP3 player, for God's sake"

Well Said.

Awesome, hearing about that EuPod program has made my day! I
may well buy an ipod after all after that because the volume
was the main thing holding me back, cheers! :D

Seeing the album art is okay, I guess, but its so lo-res you
can't really appreciate it.

And I have to say, I prefer the design of the 3rd generation
iPods. On later models they removed the four function
buttons and remodelled them into the scroll wheel. On the
3G, the buttons light up neon red when the neon blue
backlight is on, and it look really great. But that's just
my personal weakness for pretty neon lovely stuff.

Well don't let me persuade you completely... I haven't any
experience in other players... but I am very satisfied with
mine. I know other people on here have had problems. Do some
research before you rush in... its a large investment. But
yes, the volume problem really should not be a factor when
you are deciding, as its very easily rectified.

Good luck... I can't imagine not having all my songs on
demand.

*currently has about 15 tabs up on Firefox with different
mp3 players and is falling asleep very quickly*

hmm perhaps I'll go for the iRiver after all. I'm not a fan
of the ipod wheel I must say and the iRiver looks nicer,
less glitches apparently..

Yes I've heard they are good players. Might wanna get some
opinions from other XLTers before you take the plunge
though.

Right, I think I've made a final decision. I'm going to be
going for the Sony Network Walkman NW-HD5. The only downside
with it is that it uses SonicStage 3.1 music player :/

for £150 it's well within my budget too!
