I know this maybe old hat but I did a search on the topic
and found no threads dedicated to it..

so I finally got around to watching the whole thing for the
first time...

I wasn't quite blown away...

the promo art, conceptual art etc is far more mindblowing
than what's on the "film"

I am using quote unquote because it is still essentially a
music video... if this is a short film then almost all of
Cunnigham videos with pre/inter/postludes are technically
"short films" Come on my selecta and Windowlicker instantly
leap to mind...

discuss

yes, nothing too great about it..looks more like a music
vid rather than a film, not that it makes any difference
though. there was so much hype around it, my hopes went sky
high, so i was a bit disappointed by it. i didn't watch it
more than 3 times all together.

One or two great shots and sequences, but a lot of what
seemed like fill to me.......... not an instant classic.

Now that you mention it.. the opening credit with broken
typewriter is kinda groovy..

as is the sequence where the music starts, that close-up of
tongue flipping to baaaaaaaaaaaaassssss....

I like Chris, but this was a horrible purchase. The artwork
toward the back of the book is sooo bad (the drawing of
little child richard in sneakers?? I paid for this peachee
folder doodle?)

Chris has an amazing ability as an editor (and his robotics
are very nice), but jesus, *every* video has water on the
floor and he points the lights in the camera. Nice trick.
Now let someone else sit in the director's chair and stick
to chopping up the footage.

The first minute or so of Rubber Johnny film (where his dad
is speaking to him) is the only bit of genius here.

he would be a good director of photography too, but only for
that one look he's got (and it has its moments)

The original little clip for Drukqs was great, it didn't
needn't need draggin out and becoming a joke five years
later. Who wasn't appalled when, after the intro and the
expectation suddenly it's "rubber johnny" dancing in his
wheelchair. Yeah, that's not just embarrassing... at all.

For those who haven't seen it LAZY_LINK.

I feel sorry for the people that bought it.

the silliest thing out of the whole endeavour is, as has
been noted already, calling it a "short film" instead of
"music video".

Warp Films are releasing another one soon, aren't they? I
remember reading something in an interview.

why not wait 10 years and collect all six 5-minute "short
films" and put them on one dvd.

i liked rubber johnny a lot. i don't know if I'd pay for
it, but I only pay for DMT, opiates, LSD, audio gear, and
fines.

while it might not have been superamazingfilmoftheyear the
world is a better place because of it.

anyone who has sat in a dark bedroom on LSD and a laser pen
should understand the brilliance of a retarded wheelchair
bound basement recluse who does laser battle with his
chihuahua.

the splats against the screen were very clever, and i
thought some of the dancing was pretty darn cool.

we seem to have higher standards here at xltronic for
electronic media.. have to wait for the world to catch up
before we'll be seeing any "Casa Blanca" of the electronic
aesthetic

It was some retard flailing his arms around. Even as a music
video it sucked.

Wait a second. Thats what most music videos are anyway.
