I've found that D&B kinda basslines don't work without quite a bit of compression.
In terms of free VSTs, I've found Triangle to be excellent at handling low end subby shit shit. Nothing better than a sine with a square for that sort of sound.

No worries. I've been chasing the same sound recently. There's something timeless about the classic D n B sound.

maybe you can find something here and yeah, do A Lot of compression on it, maybe after you pull it through a lowpass filter of some kind...

by far the best vst plugin for drum n bass basslines is called z3ta (zeta)
it is used by drum n bass people like pendulum.
its very good, you can layer and filter like 10 oscillators, creating a fat and thick sound quite esily. it also come with tons of good presets
but its not exactly free...

thanks for the heads up on that..not heard of it , for once....... the reviews on KVR are insanely positive , but not many people talk about what they actually do with it. im assuming for vex'd/grime nastiness this would be just the ticket then?hmmmmmmm do you have it yourself gcat?

You can also try nWsynth. Very easy to use and I find its sound really good.
