drunken mastah> the fall have been through dozens and dozens of line up changes since 1976... the only constant person is mark e smith
released about 24 odd studio albums loads of eps, did 24 peel sessions(more than any one else)
i cant explain why i love em so much, their music has mega character

yeah, sure, it's ok that you like them, but.. what makes them important? I read some other reviews, and like all other reviews where a band (oddly enough, it's always rock) is called "important," they never give out the reasons why they are so important... it seems to me only 2% of the so-called important bands are actually important while the remaining 98% are just random bands that people like, and want to elevate to some god-like proportion.

my bet is they're just another overrated rock band.

I wrote a load and it just came out wrong, so, well, their entry on Wikipedia is as decent a broad overview as any other, for the casually interested observer. But, the thing is, Mark E Smith is a legend, cantankerous, visionary, never let their blips of success faze him, always dismissive of people citing him as an influence. Even has own unique fashion sense. A free thinking character in a world of play it safe clones.

dismissive of people citing his as influence? so, when someone says they were influenced by him, he just says "no !" ?
anyway, it still doesn't become apparent from that article how they are important, but I'll stop nagging now.. sorry.. I was in a bad mood.
may I also add that the fact that franz ferdinand said they were influenced by them makes me never want to listen to the fall ever again. guilty by association.

Hmm, how can you guage a band's importance after just listening to a few samples. The important thing is, in order to appreciate their significance, you have to see their progression and evolution, in order to see how much the influence other music.
And on a more shallow level, you can see how important they are by a) how many singers are doing the M.E.S. impression these days, b) by how many bands namecheck the Fall as an influence, and c) how much Mr Peel worshipped the chaps.
Also, I could never understand how anyone foreign could like the Fall, although I know they do in their multitudes. They just always struck me as a band that appealed to the working class Mancunian in all Britons.

well, yes, that was what I was asking... I didn't say "oh, I don't like this, it isn't important!"
there's lots of music where you can easily tell it's important even though you don't necessarily like it, but with rock bands, that statement should normally be taken with a pinch of salt...

may I also add that the fact that franz ferdinand said they were influenced by them makes me never want to listen to the fall ever again. guilty by association. and that's probably why Mark E Smith dissmisses most people that say they're influenced by him because 99% of the time they're just namechecking him, or they haven't a clue about the Fall, or they're jus truthless marketeers (like Franz Ferdinad) in order to, hopefully, garner some of his credibility.

id never say it was singing !! more like toasting he's never denied any one was influenced by him, little bit of confusion there, he's usually seen as dead paranoid that EVERYONE has been ripping off the Fall, whats that song that starts "Notebooks out plagarists"??
Pavement supposedly ripped em totally on "slanted and enchanted" i think dunno aint heard it
Aphex Twin loves the Fall ??? seriously??
