i had a great uncle that everyone called "dub"... i don't
know what his real name was. surely it wasn't dub, though.

Cheers.... going to check some of that stuff out.

I'm particularly interested in getting some of that fairly
modern-sounding dub, drenched in reverb with fairly minimal
vocals and fat bass. Very stoned-sounding stuff. Anyone got
any recommendations for that kind of stuff?

check "basic channel"-offshoot Rhythm & Sound if you haven't
already. it's a mixture of reggae, dub, techno, ambient.
just what you need. with and without vocals.

anything by King Tubby
(bought 2 70min 20 odd trak cds in the shop the other day
for 2 quid each!!)
of course Lee Perry "Black board jungle dub" is rad but
maybe a bit crazy for a beginner, "super ape" and "return of
the super ape'

Scientist,Augustus Pablo (dunno if he was really a dubbist
but he played a mean melodica)

the trojan dub one is good but get the Upsetter one aswell
if u see it
dunno if trojan have done a King Tubby boxset ? i think they
should

augustus pablo, king tubby meets rockers uptown,
scientist rids the world of the curse of vampires,
scientist meets the space invaders,
dynamite and studio roots comps are solid too.

I second getting the Trojan box set. Also consider
this.

'Dubstep' is something else, it's just another name for
grime and doesn't sound much like traditional dub at all.

i'm definitely still a beginner, but maybe try some of
these... different generations of stuff, but all pretty okay
i reckon':

King Tubby and the Soul Syndicate- Freedom Sounds in Dub
the Congos- Heart of the Congos
Mark Stewart and the Maffia- Learning to Cope with
Cowardice
Prince Far-I- Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter 3

and let me know if you ever find a well produced Horace Andy
album... the guy's voice is amazing, but most of the albums
i've heard so far have pretty bland backing.

for modern dub check:

burnt friedman and the nu dub players - just landed
vladislav delay - anima
radiq
calamalca - shredders dub
pole

that's all nice but pretty dull compared to old jamaican dub
imo.

you might wanna check out joel tammik - millegist for some
similar action to what you listed. especially delay. i think
it's some estonian guy and this album sounds real fresh in
this dub ambient field.

High..... if you've seen it.
