saw the last night. they're good. easy listening lounge
jazz so not really something to move my brain, but a very
nice listen. they must have played for over two hours as
people just wanted more. i don't get our people - when cool
alternative artists come usually about 50-200 people
attend, but this time there must have been at least a 1000
and mostly young people. it's either e.s.t. are getting into
mainstream or our people just prefer jazz to anything else.

jason moran with bandwagon opened for them and that was
pretty great too. he's a funny bloke..

normally piano in jazz isn't my thing but both of them make
it sound nice. although trumpet is where it's at :)
(and ribot's guitar..ohh)

sounds awesome!

est is kind of pop-jazz-ish (which explains the
turnout), but I defaintely like it. They've got a great
sound going and it doesn't have to be the worlds most
complex shit to move your brain.. in fact, minimalism is
often where it's at.

well, sure. i enjoyed it a great deal. infact those
minimalist parts were the most intriguing for me. it's when
they jam it that it isn't complex enough but that's probably
just my high standards :)

my dad got me into them. they're excellant. missed them last
time they came to ireland, and according to a friend they
were amazing.

i'm surprised you describe them as "easy listening lounge
jazz".... especially in a live setting, they're meant to be
very, very intense.

it's still very easy listening.

but easy listening isn't necessarily a bad thing. it just
means that more people find it instantly likeable.. I don't
see why that would make anything bad...

true, that doesn't make it bad at all..

i'd call it accessible as opposed to easy-listening.. i'm
not nit-picking, like, i just really find some of it very
intense, emotionally...

yeah, it's intense, but many things are intense and still
easy listening.

I guess "easy listening" is one of those concepts that need
to be purged, though this one doesn't need to remove its
religious ties.. it should rather remove its negative
status, as it actually is a "real genre," and not all things
within that genre are bad.

haha!

for sure :) i'm coming around to your idea of purging
connotations now :)

yeah, once you see how just the usage of a certain phrase or
words can make both yourself and other people assume you're
saying something bad.

in gorans case, I'm pretty sure he used it in the negative
way, but there should be some secondary.. check-up or
something (especially if I was wrong about goran using it
negatively).. some other word that indicated the "charge."
I'm not saying all words should be purged, but.. certain
words need to loose it and start anew.

still, how do you propose doing this? language change is a
very hot and touchy subject... the only way i can see would
be to create a new term...

but that term would most likely be used by the populus
sarcastically and in an even more derogatory sense than the
original. language is an aspect of the soul, and when
governments or "authorities" fiddle with it, people get very
agitated.

we can't do it to ourselves, and a new term isn't the
answer... it's more about teaching the next generation and,
well.. for our sake.. we can only keep in mind the ones we
manage to see and try to remember that the next time we read
about an album and it is classed as "easy listening," we
don't immediately dismiss it as being bad.

I'm not teacher, so I don't know how we would teach the new
generations something like this, but a good start would be
trying to stop using these concepts ourselves with the
connotations they have, and maybe it'll come naturally or at
least the kids won't pick up on it.

i listen to a lot of easy listening music and i can enjoy it
quite a bit. same goes for est. it's a bit too straiht for
my likings but that doesn't mean it's bad, it's just that i
prefer something more mind intriguing when it comes to jazz.
they are still an excellnt band though, know exactly what
they're doing and they're great at it.
