I would think :

Pink Floyd, The Nice, Yes, Robert Wyatt... that's all I
really know (I think).

The norwegian band Høst is good stuff!

Høst is HORRIBLE!

Crimson are the kings of Prog and I can't really find any
other band which comes even close in that genre.

i haven't listened to very much canonical prog... but here
are some quasi-prog bands that i dig some:

Algarnas Tradgard
Ash Ra Temple
Anima
Moolah
Brast Burn
... shit. this list is so very barely prog.

all the same.

Carrying on from DeadEight other new quasi-prog bands are
Atheist, Ruins, Meshuggah, Gordian Knot, Boud Deun.

Also if you dig 60s 70s prog-rock you might like that era's
jazz-rock fusion including Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to
Forever, Weather Report, Frank Zappa, also Dixie Dregs, and
Al DiMeola's early solo records.

listen to the Silver Apples. they are awesome, even if they
don't really have much to do with prog... sort of an Synth
Psyche band from the late 60s with a really really excellent
drummer.

ah ace, I was just about to say Ian Anderson & Jethro Tull!
I love their combination of rock with softer flute and
musical influences from other parts of the world.

America are brilliant, try Ventura Highway.

Prog from that era was the fucking bomb. Everything that had
anything to do with Egg was awesome, especially a band
called Arzachel a couple of the member were on, one of my
top 5 favorite albums of 1969. And Robert Wyatt was beyond
great with and without the Soft Machine. Osanna, The Cosmic
Jokers, Oktober, just too much good adventurous stuff with
lots of humor. Dream Theater makes me hurt.
