ok, i love these games... haven't played the first one on playstation yet, but i've loved every part of Silent Hill 2 and 3 (i had more mixed feelings about Silent Hill 4 but i enjoyed it too). with its scenario, Silent Hill 2 is a flat-out masterpiece.
but what about the other "Silent Hill" things... i know there are comics out now, and a movie is in the making... and frankly, i'm worried about those. i've seen the comic in a comic store today, didn't buy it but i looked inside and it was weird - i mean, weird but not weird in a "Silent Hill" way. maybe i'd have to read it entirely but what i've seen inside was almost nothing like it... now that's not necessarily a bad thing, as it would be quite pointless to make a comic remake of the video games, but... has anyone read it? is it any good?

I've only played the first and the fourth : I enjoyed the first because we played it with my cousin in the dark when he just had his Playstation and it was a memorable time : we were young etc... and I played the fourth last week at a friend's but wasn't much impressed, the graphics were nice and the atmosphere rather good too, but the scenario was a bit weak imo (i've only played for several hours).
I've heard the second was the best anyway !
BTW, i dunno about comics or films ! =)

I haven't tried them yet, I think I should also because I'm a resident evil fan and I really like horror games.

silent hills 1, 2 and 3 are all you'd ever need for horror games. i don't care for anything else that has to do with the franchise. it's all downhill from there.

silent hill 2 struck a chord with me, there was something about the distorted drama in it that just made me completely infatuated with the game. I've played the first one and it was also very good. I'd say 1 and 2 are the best, 3 was forgettable for me and 4 was starting to annoy me (how many games do they need to milk out of a franchise before the original concept loses it's edge).

i also always appreciated how, if something was coming at you, you could switch your light off and then it wouldn't know where you were. of course, you could end up not seeing anything as well...

I would actually like another one, in th vein of Silent Hill 2 but with technical improvements and other additions. I can't get enough of the second game, and the others felt seperate from it.

Silent Hill 1 and 2 are among the 10 best entertainment experiences I've ever... experienced. 3 was rock solid and I even thought 4 was well worth playing. I still remember a lot of the locales and music and enemies, so it DID have an effect on me and contributed to my life.
I'm confident they can get their act together and pull off something amazing for Silent Hill 5 on PS3 or whatever. The limits of what they could present were kind of reached this gen.

I'm still playing SH2 (collectors edition) for the first time. Quite a good game, but I don't think it compares to Resident Evil 4, neither in making you jump when you're playing it, or getting inside your head.

It will do by the end!
SH2 is not immediate, and doesn't have many scares that make you jump. But if you understand the story and the subtle atmosphere, and play it in one or two goes gradually getting sucked into its world...nothing compares.
The first few hours are very slow, though. It takes time to build momentum. People I know played the first few hours and gave up, discarding it is "boring"...But good things come to those who wait. ;-)

*sorry, I meant the subtle cues as to what's really going on in the surroundings...(newspaper reports, pictures hanging on the wall, objects and events in general which show Silent Hill's history, and your own future, etc..)

where are you exactly? : )
5 hours can mean you're at the beginning or towards the end depending on how you play/how good you are... my brother finished it in 7/8 hours whereas i needed 14 the first time.

7 hours, man... when I play Silent Hill games, I don't even press the run button unless I'm being chased by a demon penis monster or something, I just soak in the atmosphere. Takes me like 20 hours to beat those games.

Same here. I just love wondering around.
I hope they make a new one which is open ended and full of small details to uncover. Just you, the town, and lots of objects and situations to explore.

It would be cool to not be ''on rails''. But it would take an insane amount of work to craft that kind of world, especially with how convincing it's going to look and feel next gen. It would be a great step forward for survival horror though.
It would be cool to have free reign in the city but no way out of it. And for some reason, I think it would be terrifying to drive a car in first person in a survial horror game. The camera would have to be claustrophobically right inside the car so you could see the dash. I'd shit myself if I saw some huge vehicle's headlights spontaneously come on a hundred metres ahead, and I'd have to spin around and take the fuck off the other way down the road.

The car is a great idea: It should have realistic damage too, so even denting a wheel arch would alter the handling. Also, high speed crashes could kill you and low speed ones would sap your health. Make it so you really don't want to crash.

1 thru 3 are great.
Time for the complaining.
The 4th is fucking horrible. The controls have never been a high point in this series, but they seem even more stiff in this one. I cannot stand that guy with the crowbar that glitches & twitches as he comes after you. Fighting that dude has to be one of the worst gaming experiences ever. Just not fun at all.
The ghost creatures that can phase through walls and harm you by just being near you was never exciting or creepy; it was just annoying. The wheelchairs, the ape-like creatures (you know, because apes are scary), that cheesy human belch sound the mutant nurses make when you hit them, what the fuck happened?
In comparison to the previous games, this one was the biggest disappointment. I think the room idea is great, I just wished they would've worked up the other parts of the game. The music was still nice as always.
