just imagine some case in which you had to deal with a criminal ("normal" crime, nothing violent or heavy, but.. small-time shoplifting and purse-snatching and such), but your dealings were in no way criminal in nature (to your knowledge, which you assume is pretty solid)... random examples: he's telling you something that you wanted to know, you need someone to hold your coat for a second, you're buying something from him and stuff like that.. would you trust him?

I would steal something, then blame the criminal and point to his previous record. He'd go down for sure!

i don't think it would matter to me at all if a guy i knew had been shoplifting, i would still trust him as much... but i don't think i would trust any random person on the street anyway, criminal or not.

I trust noone.
Noone was convicted of first degree murder in the summer of 96. Since being released he has set up a number of charities aimed at helping the victims of murder by removing the burden of sadness from them and reuniting them with their loved ones.

'this man/woman has stolen something. he/she is a criminal!'
'this man/woman is muslim. he/she is a terrorist!'
perhaps not the best example but i'm sure you catch my drift.
It's just too easy to label someone as 'a criminal' so you can feel better about yourself or whatever.

can it be applied to you?
i wouldn't believe you if you told me you have never broken the law.
it's really simple ok.
if someone has commited a crime, minor or major, is it ok to label that person as a criminal even if he/she leads a 'good' life generally?

I think you're not making a difference between convincted and non-convicted criminals.
when someone breaks the law and is convincted, that person is technically a criminal. you can disagree with the term, but that's that.
like I said, when someone has paid for that crime, he no longer is a criminal. he was a criminal however.

I'm a criminal (in spite of not having a criminal record).
I think when most people say "criminal", they mean a person who regularly breaks laws that vast majority of the population would agree was wrong: theft, murder, rape, assault, etc.
The law says speeders are criminals, yet 94% of the motoring populace in the UK do it. Are 94% of the motoring populace criminals? Technically, yes.
