this is something which really has been bugging me (as a historian) for a long time now.. Is the second Reformation of the sixteenth century a counter to the Protestant Reformation of Luther or merely a constant and independant Catholic Reformation which had been going on long before Luther. Counter or Catholic? there are many arguments for both, notably that it must be Counter because the Church was in decline and they realised, through what Luther was saying, that counter-reform was necessary. On the other hand, other historians say is must be Catholic since there were reforming movements in the Church prior to Protestantism, showing that it was going on for a long time before. What do you think? |

To answer the OP: I reckon it was a counter reformation. If it wasn't for the wonderous yet hot-tempered Luther (and people who followed in his ilk, like Zwingli and John Calvin), the Church would have probably continued its scams until it was forced to stop them because of people's awareness to its corruption. |
