What if an artist such as Eightch were to "sell out"? Is it better to keep things real and keep getting fucked in the ass because you can't pay your bills only to brag that you kept it real while Britney Spears is promoting fucking shit projects while traveling around the world in luxury. The art of selling out... yes or no?

no ofcourse. if your music is good enoough it's going to sell good enough that you'll make for a living out of it. imo.

I don't know. I've really been thinking about this. Take the windowlicker video is was a perfect example of the art of selling out. It was selling out but he did it in a very artistic way and it yeilded a mass profit, by far the most popular video. It was a sell out no doubt about it but it was good which makes the difference, but what good is keeping it real when there's nothing to show for it. Like I don't know...most really talented musicians I know.

i don't share that opinion. richard is really good when it comes to promoting himself/his music. he didn't compromise his music in windowlicker which is the most important thing and chris cunningham had totally free hands on the vid as far as i know..if anyone said anything it wasn't richard but warp, although i doubt it.
and if richard wanted to sell out he could have done that before. he said in an interview that he had to take come to daddy out from sales for a week because it was going too high on the charts..
ofcourse it's easy for him since he's got enough money as it is :)

that, goran, is a load of bullshit unfotunately (at least where i live and of various places i discuss with people) :S
exemples of good music (what is it anyway uh?) never getting recognition are legions
i think you are right in the sense that a good selling out is not generaly considered a bad move from the fans
all comes down to that, selling out is whoring yourself to the masses in a sense, but you can lose all you integrity or do it with style and "panache"
obviously there is various degree, on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 could be aphex [windowlicker/come to daddy] and 10 moby [play] :D
i just woke up and maybe this post doesnt make much sense
are you johnny hawk?
am i awake?

it makes sense actually. it's quite easy for me really. when an artist compromises his music because he want to sell more, i call it a sell out. ofcourse it's not always easy to spot when compromises are being made :)

he sold out in the sense that he did it with the clear goal of raping the wallets of everybody :D
he did it so good everybody was happy to give him money, but seriously, he made the thing he (and many other artitsts) hate above all in the industry
which is the fucking promotion of the video/song which is going enough against his ideals to make him a sell-out :D
ps: i love you richard, my little sell-out idm star

how can you be sure about that? :D i bet he didn't mind the money, but i don't think he compromised his music.
and he could have sold another 1000 copies of analords if he was in for the money, but he didn't..i think many people think he's more greedy than he actually is :)

yeah, ok, doesn't necessarily mean it will sell if it's good, you're right. best if you do some pop music under some secret alias if you want to live out of music :)

Selling out to me means that you're compromising your artistic integrity just to fit into the mainstream and sell your product. I don't think Aphex ever sold out. He probably just made some catchy tunes, felt they would click well with mainstream music at the time and milked them for a while.
