XLT VIBES IDEA - Re-birth Vibes

Hi Folks,

As mentioned here:
LAZY_REBIRTH

Rebirth is now available for free DL. As such I want to
guage interest on an xlt-vibes idea: Rebirth vibes. I was
thinking along the lines of a vibes done solely using
rebirth (mac or PC version) with no effects/post-production
work, other than those bundled with it.

Something I'd like to get an opinion on is if the use of
mods should be banned (insert Jedi Chris joke here).
Personally I think it should to help retain the traditional
sound of the 808 and 909 as well as create an extra
challenge, but if everyone has their heart set on using
poisoner etc., I'm happy to go with that.

Quite aside from the tribute to what was, for many of us,
the first serious softsynth we used and a pioneering bit of
software in its own right, the classic 303/808/909 sounds
should mean lots of nice acid, detroit, techno and minimal
tracks. There's also a nice challenge for people to come up
with something that sounds fresh and interesting and
actually having to pull their fingers out and do some tight
programming, without relying on the latest "does it all for
you" softsynth presets etc.

NB: THIS IS NOT YET AN OFFICIAL VIBES. It's just guaging
interest, if there's enough, I'll speak to Phob about it.
I'll be happy to mix it/DL tracks etc. if it goes ahead.

Let me know what you all think.

Cheers,

Ceri

You missed the A.K.A. between the words Chris and joke there
:P

Sounds decent. It shouldn't take more than about 4 weeks
for the download to finish :)

I would like to have a go and would be up for it.

I am up for the challenge.

Are there any other restrictions in mind? As i saw this
really good programing interface for it. Can i use that?

yes!!

NO MODS!!! that would defeat the whole point.

I was thinking about if people could use Patternmaster (or
the mac equivalent) or not. On the one hand, I'd have no way
of telling if you did and I don't want to put too many
restrictions on it. On the other, the fiddly interface (and
consequently the mistakes that are made whilst programming
it, due to this) is arguably a part of the instrument,
particularly the 303. Personally, I'll be doing everything
in re-birth (yes, even using that compressor), but I
don't want to take the fun out the project by dictating too
much :-)

Ecnad: Yep, the DL rate is taking the Michael.

Glad to see I have an ally on this point, you just know
someone would abuse it and load absynth/reaktor sound
samples into a custom made mod. :)

Yeah Im up for this, it was true what you said above,
Rebirth was one of the first bits of music software I ever
used, and it was a turning point in the way i made music (a
lot of Hardware gathering dust since). I still love the
interface and haven't heard of the update that Skink
mentioned but I will have a look at it.

This should be a good project and it is exciting to see what
everyone produces given the same set of tools.

I bought a compilation album a few years ago which was
produced entirely using the Roland 505 groovebox. Beck
managed to squeeze a good electro track out of it. The rest
of the artist lineup sounded shit.

*Fires up Rebirth

I'm still waiting for a few more people to sig up to this
before I get it "officialised" and formalise the rules,
submission requirements, etc.

Kado: That thing skink is talking about (if it's what I
think it is) isn't an official addon or anything, it's a
third party (fan) proggy that lets you do your 303 lines on
a piano roll, as opposed to the traditional 303
weird-as-hell step sequencer.

The limited toolset aspect appeals to me also, it'll be a
level playing field for everyone involved and it'll really
test people's programming abilities.

Now, where is my old phat boy RB-338 overlay...

Great idea, let's see if I can get something done in time.

If you somehow need a hand with the mixing part, let me
know.
I would be willing to mix the tracks together.

We are not allowed to use any kind of post-processing
what-so-ever?

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2005-09-01 12:34 [#01712260]
Points: 23533 Status: Moderator | Followup to impakt: #01712243 | Show recordbag

No, if it's noticeable, the track won't be used. I suppose
you might get away with some ever so subtle
EQing/compression, if I don't spot it, but the whole point
of the compilation is:

1. To use only rebirth- it's sort of a tribute to rebirth.

2. To have a level playing field. Anyone with a mac/pc can
take part, legally, for free and have the same chance as the
bloke with the £500,000 studio.

3. To have a cohesive sound to the tracks. This should make
the mix work well.

Aesthetics: Thank you for the offer, I'll be in touch of
your help is needed, ta.

I'm not prepared to download 500megs just for a few megs for
the .exe. I'm sure others are in the same position.

Would any kind members with a fat pipe care to download the
windows image and make available just the exe and core bits.

That way many more people could get involved in this.

Because I would be well up for this!

Well, you have to program it like the original. So if you
are at all familiar with any step sequencing hardware you
should be alright with it.

it's either take 1/64th of a pee or type two syllables.
