Maybe it'll sell on eBay now for £1000 and then in a few
years' time someone will make a software emulation of it
that everyone will say is vastly inferior to the original.

It looks like you can actually now download the full program
for free from the Rebirth Museum....

Did you actually ever use rebirth or any of the actual kit?

On the downloads page you can get the Rebirth CD ROM image
if you set up an account (which I'm guessing is free to do).

Genuine LOL at that.

I haven't used rebirth in ages. Quite why so many people
claim it's the most accurate 303 softsynth is beyond me.
Audiorealism's 'bassline' is far better and in like for like
samples, I only managed to guess which was the real 303 in
60% of them (compared to more like 85-90% in rebirth).

Still, I have fond memories of it, the first version of the
demo was some of the first music software I got into.

a shame that it didn't get ported to OSX. it's a fun little
toy, but it has done it's part. let's move on (and download
it for free, since it's become abandonware)

I really hate the thing that they never updated the whole
software to fully operate under the OSX system. Oh well,
maybe someone will come up with something better. :)

once you register you can download it for free.
Its 526 MB .iso image for windows, 258mb.img or 367mb.cdr
for mac depending if you want the bigger version which needs
the CD present or the other one which doesnt.

I'm tempted to get the proper version, but 526 megs is too
much for puny 2gig/month limit. I suppose its got all the
demo songs and manual and crap that you don't need. Can't
they just have a 10meg .exe download only?!!?

yeah there are two free versions for mac os9.
They are both free to download.

one version is a CD image and requires the cd to be present
every time you want to use it.

The other version you keep on a hard disk and just mount on
the desktop when you want to run it.

I don't think there is a version for osX since osX came out
after development was stopped for rebirth.

it worked in classic on my old 400Mhz iMac (not perfectly),
but I think my new swanky G5 iMac will have no problem with
it. it's a bit fiddly though.

Vlari, a question. You know of any software like the
Shoutcast, for streaming live music thru the internet, but
for Apple/Mac?

that's the milliondollarquestion, now isn't it? i searched
frantically for a solutions when I was supposed to fill in
for mr Bell on wednesday, but I had no luck. there are
plenty nicecast-clients, but it's a bit trickier with
shoutcast. there are some shoutcast-servers, but I believe
they need to be compiled on your machine and run it in
Terminal. but that only works with files played on the
computer, and not audo fed through the line-in. i made a
thread on some norwegian mac-forum explaining my problem,
nut nobody has answered it yet.

a possible solution is to run virtualpc, get winamp and the
shoutcast-plugin running through that. it's a bit backwards,
but it should work.

Wow, ok, can see that question is worth more than a million
dollars Vlari ;) Thnx. And yes, I read about that because I
was worried that I had to work all day and probablly gonna
miss Mr Bells live Dj stream. But I read that you were going
to do it. Sad to hear that you coulnt make it that day :/
But maybe your idea of VirtualPC will be the fastest for us
Mac users so far :/ Thnx 4 your advice :) always
appreciate.

I just saw this yesterday, dunno if it's any good for you:
NiceCast by Rogue Amoeba
I haven't tried it, not having any real need.

As for Rebirth, it's sad to see it go. It's even sadder that
Propellerheads never put in the work to Carbonise it for Mac
OS X. Some of my best songs are lost now. I never managed to
get the ReWire working between Reason and Rebirth (running
in Classic).

But, and it's a big but. I'm very impressed with
Propellerheads for giving away Rebirth now, and putting
together the mods and songs. They could have just let their
old program like most other companies. But they didn't. And
that makes all the difference.

Have you made a mod for it? It's not too difficult (I
started one years ago). The source code might be an
interesting tool for some amateurs wishing to make their own
VSTs etc. though...

Do remember chaps that it's widely available on bit torrent
in a much smaller download.

Now that they're giving away the program for free, I don't
think you need to feel much guilt in owning a "pirate"
copy.......

the problem with making such software open source, is a lot
of commercial closed-source software includes libraries,
code, etc from other companies, which i'd imagine would
probably be the state here.

you can't open source such things without getting into a
_lot_ of legal shite, obviously.

go to rebirthmuseum.com, click downloads, then cd-image
download, then sign up (its free and you just gotta activate
it thru email) and log in and its there.

btw it went alot faster for me last night, jumped to around
15 kbps and it got downloaded in around 7 hours!
