first i liked this track but a second thought came up: isnt afx just showing his skills with his gear? There's just nothing special to this track its only plastic beeps and and well put beats and breaks..great; but where's his creativity? I've lost interest for his music all over again.

I think its a fantastic track. You don't know what gear he used at all, so you can't say he was showing off his skill with gear.
Say he uses 909,808,303, and a few modular bits, spring reverb and tape to record, how is that showing off?
Fatboy slim has tons of great gear, get the 'youve come a long way baby' LP and look at the gatefold photo, a whole room full of fantastic gear, yet I don't hear him making tunes like fenix funk 5.

haha..yes...they can both learn from each other i guess..i just miss something in this track, its to plastic for me..specialy with this vynil.
I know he can get A lot out of his gear..it wouldn't suprise me if its just an mc303..but its not how he uses his gear its what he does with it.

He uses his fenix modular synth and the ms-20, that's for sure.
and I quote :
I Love my Fenix !! Been getting really into the band pass filters recently... I'd be honoured if you would put me on the waiting list for a new Fenix

yeah it is popular to dislike aphex. Why? If ceephax made any tracks off analord it would be genius. I love the vocalish pads in fenix funk.

where's his creativity?
It's a question concerning the whole Analord series. I thing Richard is doing things that he simply likes. We should remember that he makes his tunes first of all for himself (and cash!).
As for Fenix; it's one of the best tracks he ever made. Simple yet effective.

Fenix Funk is one of the best tracks in the series, but not as good as XMd5a in my opinion.
I love that talking bass sound he uses, is it vocoded? I can't figure it out.

...well, if he w a s using the 909 or 808 to get those drums - that´s pretty impressive because those machines aren´t capable of those actual drumsounds... Niether are a 303 capable of being the lead synth in the Fenix funk track. It´s so funny that some peoble actually believes that the whole analord series is made o n l y with analogue gear...
The track is one of his best tracks ever, whatever he used.

i do think those two (fenix and xmd5a) could have very well been generated with analogue equipment, maybe just not for sequencing and the obvious use of reverse or some 909 sound.
i mean, all the synths and fx (reverb/delays could be digital) are probably really analogue gear
the beats sounds seems sample based, with analogue drums layered on top.
i much prefer just listening to it :D

Fenix is an example of an evolution from whatever rdj learnt from making something as complex as drukqs. Its like he's come full circle (once again) and is only using exactly waht is needed to acheive the desired result.

ok 303, 808 and 909 were just examples. However, you can process these sounds to make quite different sounds.
I think I hear a Pearl Syncussion in xmd 5a definately. Also that 'speaking synth' sounds like he is playing around with a filter. It does not sound vocoded at all.
Also shock horror some of the drum sounds probably are sampled and played back from a digital sampler!
I haven't been a huge fan of the analord series, I own 3, 10(pic disc)and 11. The others I wasn't too fussed with. I only really god 3 for Klopjob....
BUT 10 really is great.
It just shows that complex programmed up the arse tracks are good, but simple 'analogue' style tracks are just as good, if not better. The actual recording of the two tracks on #10 is hardly top quality (at least on my pic disc), but its real or "organic" if you like cliches.
Vsnares hungarian album rossig blah thingy was good, the others are quite derivative and have flashes of quality, but are not up to scratch.
Look at mangle11 vip mix, off the rephlexions album, that song was Richard doing snares style, but making it better, less boring and adding that sheen of quality, which Mr. Funk finds elusive.
Basically, fenix funk 5 is great, and if you can't hear that, then it's a shame for you....but hey its only a song.

I like the Anal ord series, but nothing he does will ever be as good as "The Richard D James" album. Sorry. There was just something shockingly original about it at the time. I remember hearing it when I was sixteen and just thinking that it sounded like music from another planet. Don't get me wrong, he still makes great music, but the next stage of mindblowing electronica is going to be made by some new jack. Someone like Jackson or Kid 606.

Although i enjoyed the analord series, there were a few things that didn't fly with me.
while i expected everything to be created in or with an analog source i thought there would be more live actual instruments (drums, guitars, piano, bass, etc etc), beat juggling...like cutting up breaks on the fly to tape...or even tape splicing beats together, and or lots of shit to really convince someone that this dude is the lord of analog. most of which weren't present on the entire release. maybe my expectations are unreasonable or too high, but thats what i was expecting.
