Torrent download speeds

I'm wondering if I'm the only one who has really
shitty download speeds. I mean, if I ever hit 20kp/s I'm
happy. Browsing my ISP's forums, they seem to have put some
kind of speed limit on Torrents -- is this bypassable at all
do you know? But then, people u/l from me at 20kp/s+ all the
time, while I am right now d/l a very popular Simpsons
torrent at the fucking shit speed of 4kp/s.

it's the same for me. that's why i never use shitty
torrents. don't know how the thing got so popular anyways.

I have to say that I've found things on Torrents that I
could never find on SLSK.. like episodes of the original
Twilight Zone and complete series of Knightmare :]

Still, sucks -- I might upgrade my package for another £7
per month -- apparently there is no speed restrictions in
place.

I've said this many times now, but the only torrent site
worth using is this beauty. It searches through the best
known torrent sites and gives the widest range of results.

find a place where they keep a upload ratio and it should go
faster

Does this mean that the more I've uploaded the faster my
speed will be? Because I've uploaded 7.05 gig of a torrent
that is a little over 2 gigs -- that was from pirate bay.

offline axion from planet rock (Sweden) on 2005-08-13 18:18 [#01694215]
Points: 3114 Status: Addict

hehe no you most have a good upload ratio lets say you most
try to upload as much as you download so if you downaload a
2 gb file you should try to upload as much as posible.and if
your total ratio is shitty you will be kicked out of the
site. which is good because everyone will try to share as
much as possible so the more seeders the faster it goes

Well I always keep my torrents active for a couple of weeks
after I've finished getting them -- and since I get them so
fucking slowly, I always u/l more than I d/l

offline axion from planet rock (Sweden) on 2005-08-13 18:22 [#01694221]

its the other way around for me i have more truoble to keep
the upload ratio then the download ratio

maybe i have but you cant have as low as 4kb/s down if you
can upload 20kb/s i think.is your max 20 kb download speed

i used to have the same problem.. after some research, i
discovered the solution was quite simple.

the reason it's slow is because you're behind a
firewall/router. forward the appropriate ports, and you will
max out your connection's downstream no problem...

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2005-08-13 21:01 [#01694348]

Forwarded the ports and not any improvement as yet.

offline sneakattack on 2005-08-13 21:07 [#01694356]
Points: 6049 Status: Lurker

two things, first one a big improvement, second one icing on
the cake
1) the port shit. if it doesn't work, maybe you didn't
forward enough ports, or just plain wrong ones; many new
bittorrent clients use different port ranges. azureus gives
you a yellow smiley on all torrents if it can't connect
fully; I've seen others do the same. Best option is to
enable upnp, which lets the client and router communicate
and configure the ports on the fly
2) get a better client. I swear by rtorrent, and get more
than 2x the speeds as with any other client..

i've been using BitLord which has a great interface for me.
I forwarded about 7 ports... how do I enable upnp?

i find azureus works nicely.

U could try limiting your upload speed to 5 or 10kbps.

http://methlabs.org/projects/peerguardian-2-windows/

This is peerguardian it blocks IP's and protects your
privacy on p2p. Particularly handy with ISP's handing out
data to gov/movie agencies.

I'm getting 70kb/s right now on a download right now, seems
to be the ceiling for me.

Anybody know if the ''official'' BT client is any good? I've
used it for a long time, had no obvious need for anything
else but maybe the grass is greener on the other side?

if the seeders are plentiful and good I go to somewhere
between 300 and 400kb/s.

just yesterday I was downloading the last episode of
"absolute power" through a UKNova-torrent and I got the
whole thing in about 20 minutes.

these are exceptions though.

Torrent d/l's are mad. When we're dealing with a good seeded
torrent I can reach sometimes 30/50kb/s on ABC (the record
here is 92) but I'm usually at 10<. Yesterday I've d/l
Family Guy, all the time at 5kb/s (even though it's very
popular). The deciding factor might be that I'm behind a
NAT. People who have "external" IP's will always have better
results. The same with slsk and all p2p's.

I also use Azureus because this program is great, there is a
symbol in front of the torrent that indicates if the torrent
is working/connected well.

Most of the time it's a port problem, every torrent site has
it's own range of ports.

Azureus has an option to scan the ports, I don't know about
other.

The only bad thing about Azureus is that it eats ram.

I'm at a Dutch torrentsite and depending on the availability
I have an average speed of about 60kb. If I choose a torrent
that is on the tracker for a few weeks then the speed goes
upto 500kb because there are a lot seeders and no leechers.

This is very cool but it's bad for my ratio ;)

my isp caps torrent downloads, i can bypass this by
downloading on port 80, as they cant block this port. I use
Bitcomet.

is there a way for me to find out if there any ports my ISP
cannot block ?

offline osiris from Canterbury on 2005-08-14 06:18 [#01694456]
Points: 473 Status: Lurker

like i said, port 80. I believe its used for surfing http
pages therefore wont be blocked cos they cant deny you that
service. So if your using bitcomet, goto options or
preferences, look for listening port and type in 80 then
restart it. Worked for me when i was only getting 4 kb/s, it
then went back up to 60kb/s max. I dont know what other
ports you could try or if you can find out which ones cant
be blocked. But give 80 a go. upnp is enabled somewhere in
the options of most p2p programs.

Yeah port80 was already forwarded -- I done it a month and a
half ago or so -- so I just changed my port on BitLord to
80. Thanks for the tip, Osiris.

My ISP also reduces the speed of non port 80 requests till
after midnight so I may try this port 80 routing tip....

out my webpages.

it also blocks some pages (which is especially funny when it
blocks torrentsites). you can switch it off for the periods
of time when it's in the way. or you can tell Peerguardian
that certain sites should be allowed.

You need to "Allow HTTP" if you want to use the web while
running Peer Guardian.

Also, if the torrents you are trying to download has many
seeders and is still slow, then it could be a firewall issue
if you are behind a router or using a student LAN.
