[spam] Sample

I am working on a new track and taking my time and
shit...but I am struggling. I have a collection of ideas
which aren't 100% cohesive at the moment. There are
sections sure to change (part of the melody which will deffo
go but I left in this mixdown) and I was just wanting a bit
of constructive feedback as to what you thing.

Note: Unlike most of the stuff I spam this is almost full
track length in its current form (about 3 minutes).

Sample

Cheers.

Hi Brian Dance - just finished listening. I think my
favourite parts were the background parts... I mean, I
thought the rest was well produced - although a tad static -
but I liked those bits the best. May I suggest putting the
background parts through an LFO Detune Trigger, and maybe
adding a nice hip-hop-type beat and, perhaps throwing in a
track-length sample of David Attenborough narrating about
sea cucumbers? :D

... I liked when the bass came in, but thought it went too
long without changing at all - maybe consider putting it
through some kind of filter or gradually changing the notes?
I liked the beats - again, maybe need to be shuffled as time
progresses!

!

That was cool.

i think some of the melodic content could do with a little
shift around. maybe a few extra little melodies would not go
a miss.

Apart from that the only advice i have is that you finish
it.

the drums could benifit from being a bit 'tighter'. and the
plinky synths at the beginning could be dropped maybe. other
than that it just needs a really good mix down to bring the
track out fully.

Thanks for the comments...you have all just said what I was
thinking I needed to do with the exception of Paul's David
Attenborough sample :P

The drums I am planning on tweeking at the end once the
structure is there, the plinky synth is what I was referring
to as needing to change at the beginning :)

i like it.

dislike the repeated melodic notes, until the ones that
appear at 1:14, they're sweet. over all i really like it :)
this is the first track of yours that i've listened to, do
you have any favourites that you could link me to, lee?

The only two possibly, remotely, worth linking are:

Shapshot

and

Dead of Night

i love where the fatter sound drops in (*contrasts great
with the nintendo ish sound sof the start) but this tune
seems to cycle to obviously if you know what i mean, i think
its the beat it seems to stay the same with predictable
fills, i think maybe if the beat built up more and droped
away some what with the melodies rather than off and on,
other than that i was really impressed got some lovely stuff
going on, the levels are great imo and id deffo go buy it
;)

I really liked it, i liked the way it got bolder and bolder,
more and more swaggering, perhaps like I imagine Ecnad
himself as the night goes on. I didn't think it was
repetitive at all, and the sound was crisp!

id idnt eman to imply it was reptative im having trouble
explaining what i mean. the sections of the song seem to
obvious i think it needs a lil more flow is all!
meh it dont matter its great anyway i really like it

i didnt like the beat, it distracted me away from the melody
plus it sounded a bit like a stock sample, the sounds not
the pattern

Thanks for listening, but I am having some difficulty in
understanding what you mean by stock sample...what sounded
like a stock sample exactly? And at what stage does a sound
become a stock sample sound and for what reason?

offline nobsmuggler from silly mid-off on 2005-08-09 13:18 [#01689536]
Points: 6265 Status: Addict

i always thinks a stock is one of the ones given in the
music software, they tend to be flat and sound generic. i
couldnt awnser the question when a sound becomes a stock
sound with a reasonable awnser, so i wont.

the snare, bass drum and clap

offline ecnadniarb on 2005-08-09 13:30 [#01689545]

There are 4 independent drum tracks being used I think the
"stock sample" sounds you are referring to are the 909
(which is the only one with a clap) which is sort of
supposed to sound that way otherwise it wouldn't sound like
a 909.

I like it! The only comment I can think of is in the
mixing. At the moment it's a good balance of everything but
it'd sound like one piece if you used some fx to glue some
stuff together.

like transistion effects? because I think that might just
work nicely. I'm off to give it a try. :)

First of all its a nifty tune.

I would say lower the snare in the mix or tweak it so that
it compliments the rest of the track's elements instead of
standing on top of them.

I didn't like this very much but have liked some of your
other stuff posted in the past. Despite seeming to have the
right software and knowing how to use it to have strong
control of the sound, the general composition is a pretty
weak aesthetically unattractive mess. The sound quality is
good though. Those bell things early on sound like an
impotent melody rather than part of the percussion/beat.
Also the end didn't sound like a minimal encore but rather a
"yes I'm still playing" while I was waiting impatiently with
my mouse on the "clear" button in musicmatch. I have little
idea how the software you use works but more
interesting/complex/intricate beats can be made in
trackers.. though not easy with that sound quality.

Thanks for listening (brokephones too), it is one of those
all too rare but pleasant occassions that I completely agree
with you wMw. The end bit wasn't really meant to make it
into the mix down and was something else I was doodling
with. I completely agree that it is a "weak aesthetically
unattractive mess". I have spent my time so far getting to
know the software packages and being able to work with a
sounds the way I want to work with them...now I have a LOT
of work to do to get the composition right.

Thanks again.

I liked this, the rave stab made me smile....at 1:14 it
really gets going and then the eerie synth towards the end
is great.

The only thing I wasn't so keen on were the drums, The
patterns were good in places and so were the sounds (did i
hear a slice of a famous hip hop break in there?) The bit I
would work on is the dynamic. Turn down the snare a bit and
use some modulation like auto-panning let the beats breath a
bit. U should try and get this finished tho, its a good
track.
