[help pls] DVDrw drives

Hi, I just bought a DVDrw drive with accompanying
software... I can burn IMAGE files fine, but I'm wondering
how I can burn AVI and MPG etc files so they will play on a
DVD player. Do I need to do something special here, or will
creating a 'DATA' disc suffice... I doubt it will,
personally.

Any help gratefully accepted.

You need to mess around with it before you can authorise it
as a dvd. I can't remember what program you need to do that
on a pc. give me a minute...

You need some authoring software. Most DVDRW drives come
with something. Try DVD Architect (was SonicFoundry now Sony
I guess). You'll need to "legalise" it cos it's expensive.
There may be some free-er one.

depends on your dvd player, some will play mpeg/avis even
xvid as a simple data disc. if yours doesnt , then youll
have to convert .

you can probably burn and play video-cd's - if it's a file
under 700Mb Nero (for example) can burn a video-cd which
plays on most dvd players.

it'll not look or sound great, ofcourse.

This is also true. My DVD player will play VCDs, SVCDs,
mp3s, divx, xvid and possibly DVD too. All those except
proper DVD can be played from DVD R data discs, or even just
CDRs

Made my first DVD and it looks fine -- I hadn't realised
that, like converting mp3s to CDAudio, there is
decompression involved -- I had thought I could get the 1st
two seasons of The Simpsons onto a DVD! Now I realise I can
only do that as a DATA DVD and now a Watchable DVD.

Google for "winavi", dodgy use of english but it works
amazing.

It actually did come with software (two different programs
that's why I didn't realise at first)... InterVideo WinDVD
Creator 2.
