ill be getting even more stuff from my friend, 5.1 boxes (i
already got a guitar synth and a m-audio firewire 410, i
paid a bit for it though, he's cleaning out his house)

so: any pointers for the 5.1?
my room is small, about 3,5m broad by 2,5m long
i want to put the boxes in the corners (and one in the
middle of the wall), maybe attached to something to get it
from off the wall a bit, so i can listen everywhere (on my
bed and behind my computer), is this correct, the
backspeakers shouldnt be halfway the room?
i want to put them near the ceiling as i know it's supposed
to be above you, so that's about 2,4 metres up
will this turn out good enough for mixing the music to 5.1 ,
will the music sound good enough? (it might be a bit to high
to put, the middle box cant be lower though cause itll be
just above a window)

it shouldn't be above you.. it's supposed to be where your
head's at when sitting/listening.

put the speakers a bit out from the corners, but as your
room is rather small it wouldn't make much difference if you
stick them in the corners either really... is this real
surround or pc-speakers, btw?

center channel in the center and sub on one of the long
walls (don't stick it in the corner).

is that just so it's easier to differentiate between what's
in front and what's behind?

I have a desk/table thing about 5 feet behind me, and my
Rear left and rear right speakers are on the corners, angled
towards me. For the most part I can hear footsteps and such
behind me in video games, but there are times when it just
sounds like I have a 2.1 setup (even when the audio is set
to 5.1 in the options) and I don't know why.

putting the rear speakers higher just makes the "room"
larger, and it could maybe be useful in bigs case, but if
your room is large, it doesn't matter. at least that's how
it was explained to me...

ok ear height front then (there's actually a normal speaker
right, besides my monitor that'll be in the way then, the
middle can be in the window frame)
i did read the back should be higher. and turned towards
each other?
this is for music, not for computer games, it's not
pcspeakers

front are for imaging, back are for filling, i guess, just
read around the 'net.

if you're listening to music the rear speakers shouldn't be
doing anything.. if you're using pro logic, they make
warbled reverb-noises which suck, so use 2.1/2.0 for music.
if they don't make any sound when playing something that
actually is 5.1, there isn't coded any sound for them to
make.. don't turn them up way higher than they should be
(they should be so that if you put them in the main out or
just send a signal as loud as the front speakers (like some
white noise.. most recievers have a "test" option that does
this"), they should sound as loud as your front speakers do
to you).

yeah I think it might possibly be that a lot of stuff just
doesnt have 5.1 coded into it, so if anything it is just
mirroring what is coming out of the front speakers, and thus
it's hard to differentiate anything.

because I do have a 'test' option in my sound settings, and
all my speakers work fine. :)

btw, here are two songs I mixed in 5.1... they are mostly
just tests, but...

51test
skid

they can be played with this plugin for winamp.. there
are a few other players and codecs for ac3 surround out
there too...

k the backspeakers should just point forward i presume, but
should they be tilted down when they're up?
