And yes, Al Qaeda did not exist as an organisation - and can be argued that it still doesn't - until 1998 when the FBI wanted to prosecute Bin Laden over the bombing of the World Trade Center. For Bin Laden to stand trial in his absence, the US gov had to use organised crime laws - normally used in mafia cases - and to do so there had to be an organisation to prosecute... hence, it was the FBI which coined the name Al Qaeda. |
