i dont have a good ear for detecting time signatures, but
lately ive noticed that pretty much every ae track are 4/4.
at first, i had the impression that most of untilted was in
odd time signatures, but i think otherwise now.

is that so?

please name some ae tracks that arent 4/4.

The opening of Pro Radii is in 7/4 I believe.

And, Cichli is in 5/4.

Actually, autechre do a lot of work with more experimental
time signature fuckery and such. One example that I know of
is called clockshifting. Where they take a section of the
song, remove one note, but keep it fluid, so for one bar,
the beat or bassline might be 3/4 but carries on 4/4 after
that, so throughout the song, the beat would be one bar
ahead of the rest of the composition. Of course, they do
this so frequently, the beat never stays at that point, and
the other elements are doing the same, so in effect they are
all moving around eachother in a seemingly chaotic, but
organized fashion.

Trying to do this and make it sound proper (ie: not
noticable) is next to impossible for someone with my
skill in programming. The fact that a lot of people don't
pick up on it right away is what indicates their skill in
programming.

I think they call that out of phase, in compositional terms
(not same as the effect) a technique used by a lot of
minimalist artists. (Steve Reich and the GRM massive yo)

Like you said it shifts the timing forward or backwards,
creating a completely different and ever changing
perspective on the sounds.

Hmm. Are you talking about removing the bar from a section
of the piece or the whole thing? As far as computer
production is concerned, I know it as being called
clockshifting because of the use of midi.

ok, maybe I should have replaced "has plenty of" with
"occasionaly do", but the fact is they still have
demonstrated a use of irreg. time sigs.

I'm pretty good at spoting time signatures(I've got VSnares
pegged) but one AE track is a mystery to me: Left Blank from
EP7. I can follow the rythm with no problem but I have no
way of nailing down the TS due to it's odd structure. Damn
good track.

they are clever with using oddly accented beats to
impressionist assymetrical time.

Left Blank drifts. The first few measures are in 10/4 then
it moves to a weirdly gapped 4/4 then I was too lazy to
follow it from there.

More specifically, you count at the pace of the tempo and
stop when a fimilar melodic or rythmic phrase repeats. The
number you get the numerator of the time signature. The
denominator represents the lengh of each beat counted. 1=
whole note, 2 = half, 4 = quarter and so on.

non 4/4 time signatures are so over-rated - I don't
understand why there are many people who crack a boner
everytime they hear a song jammed into a different time
signature. If you want wild you want poly-time signatures
battling against poly-key signatures retroverted.

offline Quoth from Sweden on 2005-07-12 20:26 [#01660826]

i think that it is important to understand that it's not a
matter of a "time signature" when it comes to autechre... i
think you should hear it in a different sense, like
listening to the start of phrases... a rhythmic statement
made by the two we call, Autechre, should be looked at how
many times this happens in one minute or BPMs... i think
it's all about bpm's to ae b/c you can use a set parameter
of how you are going to go about slicing beats up... in
essence it is all about the ups and down beats that happen
in one minute or a nano-second when we're talking about
these guys

time signature just sounds weird... their definitely not a
"thump thump thump thump" group that does that sort of shit
on their album
