I have a Sony Net MD Walkman MZ-N510 and a microphone. I tried recording with the mic plugged into both the line in and the headphone slot but when i play it back there is no sound. The microphone is not faulty, so what's the deal?

what i meant was, i tried it once with the mic plugged into headphone slot and another time with the mic plugged into the line in, but neither worked.

does it show a signal when you're recording? usually the volume bars are used to show the signal level.

ah, I've got the MZ-N707. mine has a line in socket, and a mic socket. just looked at an overview of the MZ-510 and it has no microphone slot. the thing about a line-in slot is that it has no pre-amp, so the signal needs to be boosted in order to work.
you either need a pre-amp or a powered microphone (i.e. one with a battery in).

ahhh, that is most likely the problem. i just turned the volume up fully and discovered it actually recorded something but at a very low volume and only in the left channel.
