how do i create a soundin-soundout patch so that i can
actually hear anything? how do i create even just a basic..

To hear something in max/msp:

create 2 objects:
type "cycle~ 440" in the first one
type "ezdac~" in the second one (changes into a speaker)
connect the cycle to the ezdac
press CTRL+e to leave edit mode
click on the speaker

you should now hear a 440 hz sinewave
