Rubber Johnny

Okay, when the wheelchair dancing starts there are light
beams moving around. From what I can tell, the dog is
shooting them from its eyes and johnny catches them with
elbows and hands until he misses and slaps his head into
bits.

What else is there to say, I enjoyed it.

i watched it earlier today on my mates computer, i have
moved into his for a few days and i thought it was really
cheesy and generally not very good apart from the face
against glass part at the end.

Yeah... that dancing around was pretty fucking stupid. I
can't believe they were trying to pass it off as a short
film, where it was about as much of a short film as
windowlicker or come to daddy.

Everything before the cocaine scene is superflous, in my
opinion. Everythign after that was complete gold, and the
face going against the camera, completely amazing. I had to
keep rewinding just to watch that bit.

It's cool Chris Cunningham is still doing stuff, but
everything he does isn't complete gold. I still quite like
this, but the book of art was a dissapointment.

I don`t get the "shooting" part. What`s going on?
Cunningham-wars?

The more I think about RJ, the more I find it a waste of
time (and money).

I know it's hard to speak about it as your mouth is full of
RDJ's cock. It's a fun 6 minutes. Warp are at fault
calling this a film. It's a bit of fun but expensive for
what you get.

they played it at that festival aswell..fascists seemed to
have liked it so i suppose it's fun for a lot of people. im
not sorry i bought it, but they could have put something
else on that dvd..anything would do..a robbie williams
vid..something

6 minutes is a sad fucking expensive joke

as it was the 26 mixes fo cash considering half of it was
edited and from mp3s

fucking not funny jokes

Points: 50073 Status: Moderator | Followup to nacmat: #01651601

infact i would have paid much more for those 6 minutes if i
had to, it's not about the money at all..it's just that i'd
expect something longer since it took him that long to
make/put out.

as for 26 mixes - it's afx, man!! about time you show some
appreciation!! he's a god!!

he is great, and my fav probably...

but if he makes a compilation of mixes at least he could
have worried about giving us some good quality recordings...
and not those shitty sounding mp3s

evenso I play it a lot... and snjoy it... but still... I
feel cheated...it could have been done alot better

see, that's your problem. i never play those mixes so i
can't notice the shit quality.

offline outpt on 2005-07-03 18:10 [#01651648]

i think part of the problem is that the hype surrounding a
lot of the warp artists in particular is killing the
releases because people are expecting too much for too long
it leads to disappointment on relese.

Points: 50073 Status: Moderator | Followup to outpt: #01651648

that's partly true..i don't think i'd appreciate 6 minutes
dvd no matter who's was it.

Points: 31271 Status: Lurker | Followup to outpt: #01651648

my dissapointment with 26 mixes is not based on a long
wait... at that time I had been knowing aphex music for just
1 year... so I was still discovering the rest of his back
catalogue at that time...

my disssapointment was based on the bad quality of the sound
of all the tracks... and I am sure the masters are somewhere
and they shall be good or better quality

so it makes me thing that they didnt loose much time in
doing such compilation... which is a shame

a lot of earlier electronic music is poorer quality.
especially in the days of early computer remixing (which
isn't that old)

tolstoyed i agree that the 6 minute dvd would be a
disappointment to people and that warp basically lied
calling what is little more than a glorified music video a
short film.

well I like that "xtal" and "tha" have that shitty quality
cos I know they were recorded from cassette tape... and its
part of the leyend and all... but in the case of thos emixes
I dont think that is the case,.... probably its simply that
they didnt bother to search for the person who had the
masters or simply that they wanted to punish us all of using
p2p

Hmmm. I kind of felt embarrased watching the video. All
those dancing scenes really threw me off. Especially the
ones from the forward facing view...

I liked the beginning where the father was talking to him...
and his eyes were doing that creepy shit. If they had kept
it like that, I would have loved it. Slow and creepy... just
ambient stuff.

I liked it. Found it pretty amusing. And, when you consider
the painstaking way it was shot and edited it's not
surprising that it took that long to produce six minutes.

Besides, between 5 and 15 minutes is very common for
shorts.

As I understand it, Cunningham was working on Rubber Johnny
in between writing his feature length script for WarpFilms
and another short/music vid rumoured to feature
Squarepusher's music - due out later this year.

Yes the hype surrounding Rubber Johnny was ridiculous, but
people should try and avoid succumbing to the hype-machine.
Early electronica releases by Warp and other labels and
early audio-visuals projects blew people away because no one
was expecting anything. No one knew the latent potential
that was there. These days everyone awaits new
albums/films/AV material as though it's the second coming.
Audiences are far more sophisticated, yes - but they're also
more impatient, and less willing to suspend their disbelief,
take the material at face value and marvel at the
craftsmanship that has gone into making it.

isn't it annoying to see Warp feeding this hype, though?
almost trying to instigate it?

rubber johnny just seems really throw-away and forgettable
imo. a short series of films based on say, 4/5 tracks from
Druqks would appear more worthy of the effort and money
invested into rj which to me feels so self-indulgent.

Look at all this negativity. Am I the only one who was happy
with it? It was well crafted visuals against nicely cut
sound. And, honestly, it wasn't that expensive. The
book was pretty good and a damn sight more than you get with
most packages.
