Whoooa, whooooa, written by Richard Curtis, "whose credits include the screenplays for "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill" as well as writing and directing "Love Actually." - "Love, Actually" is the worst film EVER made, where he's already crossed taste barriers when it came to 9-11. Now, he's set a love story at the G8 summit to give whatever weak, soul sapping "jokes" some cod political clout. This man is seriously insane. This film will have no, no, no relation to lost in translation save that it's got an older bloke and a younger woman, and I will kill myself before seeing it.

it wasn't very good.
trying to tie in a romantic comedy with facts about all the people dying in Africa everyday..
I never saw any chemistry between Bill Nighy and Kelly Macdonald (the romantic leads) - I think Macdonald was miscast, she's a good actress, she looks nice but she just has no real appeal. she kind of comes over a bit drab.
and then she delivers her big speech about how the G8 should really do something about this terrible thing in Africa and ofcourse she's right, but then all the government fat cats say "oh what a silly girl" and continue on their way.
except that suddenly, the next day they suddenly don't - yet another thing that's very hard to swallow. why did they suddenly change their minds? because Macdonald had an impressive memory for statistics? because Nighy told them that surely they weren't the kind of men they wanted to be when they were children? I don't buy it.
the whole thing has a good message, but that doesn't make it a good film, instead it kind of cripples it.

"The bit where the young chap goes to America. So he instantly meets three gorgeous women in a bar, and they start saying he should sleep with them but they only have one bed and no pyjamas, and they have a sexy friend coming over... I'm thinking what will be the clumsy joke here, they're prostitutes? The friend will turn out to be a transvestite? The English chap won't "rise" to the occasion? NO, none of these things. The genius of the writing means that THERE IS NO JOKE, the chap goes off and has sex with 4 girls and comes home with one of them. GENIUS. It's like he said all along, American girls can't resist an English accent. OH WONDERFUL. If I was an American woman I'd really enjoy this playful mockery of me, no, I really would."
yeah, Dan, like you really care about all the American women being wrongfully portrayed in an English romantic comedy.
you sound like one of those people that write in about swear words on tv, there. :D

sadly, yes.
but attacking the film for being unrealistic (which to me seems to be what you are doing in that part of your review) is kind of missing the point of films like these - it's supposed to be a dumb, fun film. it doesn't propose to be very naturalistic.

WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? Am I really that mad, have a really slipped beneath the surface of reality and now only see the world through some veneral, hallucinogenic miasma? That film is so bad... I accept there's suspension of belief, I lile "Friends" (yes, I've said it now), there's flawed films, there's shit films, I accept them, but that one is like THE DEVIL HIMSELF made a love story and wanked in the viewer's face. It's got nothing to do with realism. It's just the laziest, weirdest pile of shit that makes me genuinely afraid for the human race.

oh don't get me wrong, I think it's a pretty awful film.
but a comment like that would make me skip the whole of your review - it would tell me that you do not like this genre of film (I do think it's a genre of it's own) so I wouldn't see it as a particular useful review, something which actually tells me anything about the quality of this film.
it's a bit like a review about some western film starting out with "What was up with all the cowboys and horses in this film... sheesh!"

I'm not fucking making a point about fucking realism for fuck's sake. The point of that comment is, the suspension of belief is strung out too far and, most importantly, there's no fucking joke at the end of it. If anything that's realistic of "life", but I don't document the fucking months and endless months of my increasing alcoholism and internet bound life and sell it as a "Romantic Comedy", that's false advertising.
None of the fucking film is "realistic", but it's not fucking heart warming, romantic or funny either. So what is it? A pile of shit.

I'm not going to argue about this, clearly I've gone mad and everyone else is sane. Richard Curtis has redefined the multi-narrative romantic comedy and written some of the finest instances of Hugh Grant saying "Bugger", and I'll not fucking bang on about how he makes me want to destroy all media outlets that carry his work.
