I think ALOTD is more about furry inflation porn rather than incompetent webdesign.

im confident. ive studied web design and usability for years. i'll offer usability and value... most sites on the net are a bag of shit.. and for companies or net businesses they could be loosing out on a lot of custom due to bad design.. people will simply go elsewhere if they cant navigate properly. same goes for disabled users blah

I'd focus on web design for disabled users if I was going into the area with your experience.
Any UK site providing a service is legally obliged to make their site easily accessible to the disabled, just like real world offices. Eg they should be compatible with text only browsers, images should contain meaningful, relevant captions in their tags, etc.
It hasn't happened yet, but it only needs one disabled person to takes someone to court for it (they'd have a very strong case) and all the big businesses will be champing at the bit for people specialising in making themselves seen to comply.
Sod it, get a disabled mate to be the person to launch the court case once you're in a position to capitalise on it.

good point.. but id rather not discriminate against the abled at the same time.. so i'll go for the best of both worlds. i can compete on value and speed anyway.
thanks for the advice, it was very good. i'll post thelink to my company when its all done and dusted. its well underway anyway.. just need to invest in laptop and software and company registration now.

I've been doing it freelance for about 5 years now. There's always work because hardly anyone is ever happy with their website, or even if they are, after a couple of years they want a re-design. The choice you have to make is between doing lots of little sites, or investing your time and energy in one big web project. As I get bored easily (nearly 7000 posts on XLT provide testament to this) I do lots of little sites. I did need to upgrade my habits with making everything xhtml compliant, I was a fierce abuser of tables in the past, but now I am fully CSS.
