FLAC ME!!!

I began converting my CD's to FLAC today for use in a
forthcoming project...there really in a very definite
difference between FLAC and MP3, so I will now have to get
FLACING everything instead of MP3.

Lots of room to store whatever.

I doubt you will ever tell the difference between flac and
lame --alt-preset extreme.

but as i think you've mentioned before, it does have the
advantage of any forwards compatability issues

True, I would trust flac for archival purposes not mp3.

I'm ripping the Jeck & Schaefer Songs for Europe to both
formats so I'll test that.

Oh shit, what a difference. The flac has much more space and
detail. It's like the mp3 collapsed the stereo separation
and blurred the details. Little things that are obvious in
the flac, I have to strive to make out in the mp3. And this
was alt preset extreme.

I'm sold.

how's it compared to vinyl?

Same as CD compared to vinyl I guess. It's a lossless
compression scheme so if you rip the CD on a good CD drive
with EAC and encode to flac it should be identical.

ok. I guess i'll still stick to the vinyl then... however
it'd be nice to have those impossible-to-get albums in
flacs...

also ive noticed, mp3 is a bit louder for some reason and
distorts a little

I haven't noticed a difference in volume but if the mp3 is
dropping details it could be acting similar to a "soft"
waveshaping distortion. Straightening the curves, flattening
the hills, beats all you never saw been in trouble with the
law since the day they was born.

that's just about right. the mp3 compression algorhythm
tends to make its own way the only way it knows how

dammit! of course there's a difference!

mp3 = lossy format
flac = lossless

this message board sure looks weird in the amiga voyager

flac is noticably better for archiving cds, but it's
impractical to share.

sorry for being obvious, i'm drunk. flac rules.

i've ripped a lot of my CDs in mp3 256kbps so that i can
listen to them on my laptop during the holiday ; i would
have FLAC them if i had enough space but it wasn't possible
nevertheless i can't really tell the difference between FLAC
and mp3 256 _ in fact i prefer listening to FLAC but can't
say why ; maybe it's in my subconscient mind
