items needed:
-a shitload of plastic straws -one of those lighters you use for lighthing a stove (with extended metal tubes)
-basic knowledge of 'primary structures' (a pyramid consists of 4 triangles and 1 square for example)
-spraypaint
this was a lot of fun to make, although 'welding' the straws together was difficult sometimes, but it's more fun than using glue. i hope to make this even bigger, but it will probably take days.
i'm doing this for a school assignment by the way, but only because i would make something like this for fun. i hope they won't be giving me the 'this is just straws in a pyramid shape' lecture again. sol lewitt is a major influence and he got famous with his minimal structures too.

you can also see how long you can keep a malteser in the air, compete against your friends (not a requisite).

thanks :) whats really cool now is to 'isolate' independent structures inside this pyramid (although it would be easier if it were bigger) by coloring the matching straws a different colour. ie: a reversed pyramid inside a normal one (not possible yet i think) etc. btw, teh people at school liked it.
will update if i continue working on it!
p.s: cool avatar!

basic girder would be used as a template for calculating shear forces inside straws, thats an idea.

heh. good observation. bad writing on my part.
no i haven't, but i meant to say 'i hope they try and understand why i made this, and not came up with some amazing story for it all to make sense'.
these people are really fixed on 'the process' of things and want to see the evolution of things you make. i just wait until the last day and build something for which i got the idea maybe just 30 minutes before while shopping for groceries.

you probably know this already but pipe cleaners can be fun to play with in this sort of fashion as well, if you want to have some funky looking stuff inside the pyramid it may be a good idea, at the very least you should have a lot of fun,
I've found that you can make almost anything if you carve up some styrophome and use pipe cleaners as joining pieces,
I've got some models of humans I made using pipe cleaners and sytrophome, I'll take some pictures when I finish cleaning up and charge the batteries to my digital camera...
