hey yo, i'm on the eve of handing in my university pop portfolio and i'm in need of a bit of assistance from you guys if possible... basically, i just want some opinions / comments / constructive criticisms on this new track of mine, which is the opening song of my university portfolio. basically i just want comments because if i am going to change anything about this it would have to be tonight...
...and of course you are the first to get the pleasure of hearing me sing! ha.
anyway, please check it out, and let me know what you think... extra comments about the mixing, levels, structure and songwriting would also be of great help.
cheers

oh how fondly i remember, little did you know, i took you there on purpose!
thanks for listening mate :) i appreciate it... changes are hard to make on this track now, i cant even play it in any programs other than a rendered wav... so each little change is becoming a 30 minute process :/ hehe

This is great, and any opinion of mine (make the piano a bit louder) would be a musically uneducated one compared to your knowledge for this kind of thing.
btw, how is the whole maudlin thing going?

maudlins great, winding down a bit and making way for "the_re/enactment" which is basically me being a controlling bastard and making it a bit more of a massive attack-esque affair instead of being tied down to a band... basically i just want to vary up my vocalists... no offense to stephanie she is great and i will use her in future.. :)

varied vocalists would definitely make for a more versatile approach, but keep your friends close and your vocalists closer ;)

it sounds all right. my only comment would be that the vox are a little too high/distorted in the quiet parts of the song but they fit in nicely in the louder parts. if it were my track, i would have eq'd them to sound more "wax-papery" in those quiet parts, like how the strokes record their vocals. but anyway, it does add a raw, garage recording style quality to it so it still sounds pretty good.

Have you thought of panning the 2 vocal tracks to either side? Just a thought...

It's nice. At first the vocals didn't agree with me, but they're really growing on me now. :) I do think I agree with what evolume is saying, though. At the beginning the vocals seem too loud compared to everything else that it's almost a bit shocking, but when the piano comes in they fit better.

vocals are too loud. add a hi-pass filter on the vocals so that it sounds that it's coming from a cheap speaker and then add some distortion. (make it sound a bit more industrial-ish). the vocal is also missing some high end so add some eq there.

everything is alright except that the vocals aren't really blending with the track. I'm not saying my tips are going to work but it's worth a try I think :)
