the subject of this speech is sound recording/engineering. he also talks about his own experiences as an engineer and his philosophies on the "industry" and stuff like that. it's a little dry since it's a college lecture, but it's very worthwhile if you're interested in sound recording and/or if you're a fan of albini. |

well, i can't remember it exactly, but this guy (critic, writer) was hanging out with someone (i forgot the name unfortunatelly) who was good mate of albini the night before he was scheduled for the interview with albini. and that albini's mate had some woman along, who apperantly was the reason one of former albini's bands fell appart but they didn't mention that..anyhow this writer/critic didn't know about it and he asked albini the next day what was the reason for that same band to fall appart and albuni explained about that woman and then the guy figured it must be the same woman from last night and he mentioned that and that made albini real upset and went completly quiet for 10 minutes or so..he thought that was the end of the interview but apperantly albini calmed down and they could continue :) ahh women & rockstars.. |

i heard big black trashed a hotel room cause the promoter didn't provide the promised variety of altoids, true story. any, steve albini usually makes for a good interview, he's such an irascible, cantankerous and lecherous character. on an unrelated anecdotal note, i missed my only opportunity to see big black live due to a massive headache (how's that for irony?), but the show ended after 20 minutes when someone (possibly in the band) lit a roll of firecrackers and the fire department showed up. i'll be interested to see if albini offers any advice on the use of pyrotechnics in his lecture. |

well, i don't know why he would tell that stoy if it wasn't true :) i know for a fact that that critic/writer interviewed almost every big alternative star i can think of..he writes for different magazines and is a memeber of some group of advisers for music for the ministry of culture. im not sure, but that albini's friend could have been peewee herman..dunno how to check that story though :) |

well, i'm just saying that it's sparse with details. where did it happen? in slovenia? and what are the chances that it would be the one woman who "caused" a band to break up (i guess it would have to be the band rapeman)? i'm not calling anyone a liar, but people do exaggerate sometimes. and i wouldn't rule out the possibility that it could be totally true. |

must've been the band, then. the people i knew who made it to the show couldn't see who lit them. word to the wise, though: if you're playing a show in champaign, illinois, ixnay on the cendiaryinay evicesday. |

oh, he was just explaining us about the sort of stuff we must be careful when doing interviews, things that can occour, and he just sort of quickly mentioned that story - i bet he would love to tell us the details but no one asked him to so he just started to explain other stuff..i can always aski him for details though :) ofcourse he could have exaggerated..and it didn't happen in slovenia, i think it was in chicago. |
