do you reckon music has to has a structure to appeal?
do you think it's necessary for a piece of music to have
that to be beautyfull?

I love structured repetition in music, but it`s not
necessary. And what about improvisation?

the question wasn't which do you prefer, it was do you think
it's necessary.

It depends on the track. Any structure, not matter how
loose, can sound good if the composer has a good handle over
things imo. However, I think a track can fall apart if the
structure is annoying or unsatisfying (however much I love
"Spokes" by Plaid, I've always found some of the tracks to
have really irritating structures.)

My favorite pieces are those 20-minute floaty ambient pieces
from the 70s by bands like Tangerine Dream. Personally, if
the structure of a piece is too predictable, I find it
boring.

Music always has a structure. Are you asking whether it
needs to be 4/4? If its not structured, then its noise (I
mean that literally, not the 'oh crap... thats not music,
thats more like noise' kinda way that plastic people use).

Noise can be enjoyable too. Its just not music.

so would you not classify a drone as not music?

i was about to say exactly the same thing. music by
definition is structured.

Well, if its a drone from a natural source, or generated
accidentally I would consider it a noise. But if it was
programmed, and uses a certain ammount of skill or
experience from the person making it, then it has a
structure. Generally, the programmer/musician is structuring
the noise to sound the way they want. It might not be 4/4,
but its still a structure.
